California Hauntings

A look at some of California’s haunted houses and businesses to prepare you for Halloween.

The Haunted Doll House, Bodega

Also known as Charlene’s Country Treasures, this home was purchased in 1974 with the previous owners saying that they hoped she likes ghosts.  Charlene Weber had purchased the home in the hopes of opening an antique store and doll museum.  As time passed, she began to aquire her dolls, the most unusual being a life sized effigy of an eight year old girl.  The girls parents had a death mask made of her face as she lay in her coffin.  An exact likeness was created and made into a doll.  The girls hair, eyelashes and eyebrows were removed and placed on the doll.  Charlene aquired the doll upon the death of the girls parents.  Soon she was awakened in the night by the sound of glass breaking and a zither being played.  Upon arriving on the second floor she found glass from the doll’s case littering the floor.  To her horror, the doll’s usually smiling face now held an expression of sadness and a tiny tear had formed under one of the eyes. The next morning the doll was found standing in the middle of the floor rather than on its pedestal and the sad expression was gone from her face.  The doll appeared lifeless again except for te eyes which followed Charlene’s every move.   The ghost of a man was also sometimes seen around the house.  The house is now abandoned.

There are many other stories of hauntings in California, some very well known, others not so famous.  I just might have to visit a few more of these places sometime.

I always love a good ghost story. Loved the article. By the way, the Winchester House is freaky beyond comprehension. Not so much as far as the “ghosts” that purportedly haunt the place, but the fact that a person could just keep building non-stop. Not to mention those doorways that lead straight to a drop outside. Good stuff.

I was completely freaked out by the Toys R Us tale. I love a good ghost story. These were nice.
