Channeling: Communication with The Spirit World

This article describes the ancient practice of communication with the spirit world. Across cultures and time the practice of channeling is highly controversial but there are some individuals who appear to be the "real deal".

Channeling, communication with the “spirit world”, is common to all religions and cultures around the globe.  Tribal Shamans (prophets), from Moses to Joseph Smith, claimed to have communicated with the supernatural forces of the Universe.  If you believed the Shaman, your life was then shaped by the sacred messages from the spirit world.  The label used to described the person doing the channeling is dependent on the size and influence of the group membership.  Someone channeling as an occupation, such as John Edward, is called a  psychic “medium” while leaders of religious groups, using the same methods as “mediums”, are labeled as prophets if some of the messages are predictive of future events.  The distinction is political, has nothing to do with methods used and credibility is highly dependent on the charisma of the person doing the channeling.

The contemporary cottage industry of Channeling is very lucrative and as such attracts many charlatans.  And with the advent of the world wide web, the charlatans far outnumber the sincere individual who actually believes that they are in communication with the spirit world.   Debunkers of modern day channeling are not necessarily debunking the entire process but only the person claiming to have the channeling ability. What is really strange about the debunkers is that many are actually involved in some sort of religion which advocates prayer.  And prayer is nothing more than one way communication with the spirit world.  However, those who claim to have received an immediate and direct answer might be considered schizophrenic rather than devote. How then does the average person separate out ‘reality from fiction’ when it comes to channeling?  The question obviously assumes that there is a reality to “channeling”.  Using the conclusions of debunkers to answer the question is simply another form of ‘trust in the messenger’.  The debunker has no more credibility than the person they are debunking.   Eventually all of it simply comes down to who you want to trust because there is no litmus test for channeling.

I believe that we all have a natural psychic ability, but that not everyone chooses to use it. By psychic ability, I mean an instinct that allows us to ‘know’ things outside the realm of the conventional senses. I’m still not sure that these ‘connectons’ come from the spirit world though.
