Ghost Hunters: Frauds or Forthright?

A few vocal detractors are leveling charges of fraud at the Ghost Hunters.

The Debunkers

The debunkers are the ones who think it’s a trick, and then figure out a way that it could be done.  YouTube abounds with these videos, many of them quite atrocious.  The only problem with the debunkers is that it’s binary thinking, if it can be debunked, then obviously it was faked.  Fallacious reasoning.

There are a lot things that “could” have been faked.

  • The moon landing
  • The death of Elvis
  • The twin towers collapse
  • The assassination of JFK, for most of you out there, aside from your parents telling you he existed how do you even know such a man existed?  Let alone became President.

The only answer to the debunkers is also obvious, just because something can be faked, doesn’t mean it was faked.

The Envious

As far as I’m concerned, these are the really nasty ones.  Those who accuse them of doing all of this simply for profit.  Uhm hello, what part about the group starting fourteen years before there was ever a television show, don’t you understand?  Seems a long time to wait just to cash in.

So what if a couple regular people make good?  So what?

So what if they make bank?  Boku bank.  My answer is good for them.  Good for them, their interests, and what they’ve given to the communities, and any people they’ve helped, good for them they profit from it.  We all work to better our situation, why should they be any different?

It’s the American Way.  So I don’t think they owe anyone anything, except to be true to themselves.

Do You Believe in Ghosts?

Do I?  Sorry Jason, sorry Grant, I don’t believe in ghosts.  But every week I look forward to watching the show.  I enjoy it.  I enjoy it because it is exactly the guys down the block doing something interesting.  Learning and pioneering methods and tools that no one else uses.  And these people aren’t movie stars, they’re not rocket scientists, and they have neighborly drama sometimes.

It’s fun. (And I can identify with Steve, I won’t fly either)

Sure I have my moments when I look at the screen and go “that was a cat, not a ghost.“  I’ve been outside at 3AM in the morning and I’ve heard cats make that noise.  That was a cat.  And I am sure that there are times when what they’ve run across are just people who live under the radar, the homeless, the homeless by choice, etc.  Some of the places they go, how could they not?

I’m sure that sometimes people try to fraud and trick them.  I’m equally sure that at times members have tricked each other.  Because it’s like family.  It happens.  And a little bit of all of that will get captured by the cameras and end up in the show.

So…I don’t think they’re frauds.  I really see no reason not to give them the benefit of the doubt, or suspension of disbelief.  It’s interesting.  It’s enjoyable.  We don’t always come to the same conclusions, but hey, that’s family.

I wonder if next week will be a new episode?  I can hardly wait!

Interesting, I haven’t seen this one – I try to avoid reality shows, whether the people are alive or dead.

I don’t believe in ghosts either, but I do believe in demons who mascarade as familiar spirits.

I haven’t actually seen Ghost Hunters, but a few weeks back I saw a similar show, and while I do believe in ghosts, nothing they had to show really made me believe they had encountered anything. Sure they had some sound logic to their methods, but I find it hard to take anything on TV for face value. Are they generating false evidence just for the sake of making a show? Probably not, but it’s equally possible that it’s all scripted and manufactured. Faked or not, I found the show extremely dull and found something else to watch after about ten minutes.

Interesting article. My son’s friends are into these shows, although i haven’t seen this one, personally. An enjoyable read.

There was a time I didn’t believe in ghosts, but after moving into an apartment above a funeral home 20 years ago, the unexplainable happened, and to a much greater extent than this show depicts. I love to watch because I had this experience, but overall the show is dull, very few exciting moments. If it were faked, there would be much more happening. Losing credibility would be a death knell to their show. They’re good guys and I love the fact they try to disprove claims, although that doesn’t really lead to exciting TV.

I enjoyed your article and I am a fan of the guys and do watch Ghost Hunters all the time. Do I believe in ghosts? It’s possible they exist.

I used to be a fan of the show, but the longer it\’s on, the more I am suspicious that they are not all legit, which is disappointing because I like them. What cemeted this for me was when I was watching the Cape May episode. They showed a door closing and you can see a hand closing the door and then going out of frame right before it stops. The guys never mentioned this. How is it that I see it immediately, but these guys who are always scrutinizing everything didn\’t see it? Ridiculous.
