Haunted: Norwich State Hospital in Norwich, Connecticut

This is a place that many people like to explore. They are interested in the stories and the goblins and ghosts.

Norwich State Hospital in Norwich, Connecticut, not far from Foxwoods Resort Casino and Mohegan Sun Casino has long been a place considered haunted. It goes with the number of people who want to venture onto the landscape and discover its hidden live of spookiness as you can see from the map. There are many local stories of things that happened there. It is in a very convenient spot being right next to a commuter parking lot near the entrance to main high route 372 and route 12. Just venturing onto the land will get you kicked off by security.

Norwich State Hospital or Asylum has a
history
up until 1972. This history covers nothing concerning the haunting. People talk. It is part of the talk of Creepy Connecticut. This home for among the criminally insane, where you figure from stories that the patients were tested upon with the doctors experiments. Here is where the violent patients were placed. When this place closed, their patients were sent to the Connecticut Valley Hospital in Middletown. It hit the Shadowlands as a place of veritable creep ability.

There are plans to demolish the buildings. Here are articles on these buildings and a very old picture of the site. The land and the building areas will need to be cleaned up of all its waste. Here is an article from someone who had visited the place while it was open.

The number of buildings on the site and the fact that it was opened in 1904 can only mean it has a lot of mysterious and perhaps deadly stories attached. If a place can close and stories are still being told can only mean this place has a lot of supernatural history.

I used to live in Norwich CT and went on the State Hospital grounds several times after it closed. It was a creepy place when it was open and if you were on the thames river behind the hospital, you could hear the screams of the inmates. After it closed, you could STILL hear the screams of the inmates. As scouts in my childhood, we were required to go there and sing to the less violent patients. It was closed for good in the 80’s. Contrary to popular belief, not all patients went to other hospitals, many were put out on the streets. I had a friend that did mental health outreach for these people. I, too, did human services in CT for a bit. One of my last clients came out of that hospital on over 30 medications and no records of why he was given those drugs. It took months just to wean him off the drugs so that doctors could decide what he really needed. YIKES!!!
When I was sneaking into the grounds there was no security at all, but this was more than 10 years ago. I understand that there have been several attempts by big companies to buy the place, it is on a prime piece of real estate, but they always seem to fall through. If any place in the world is haunted, it’s this one.

We used to love to walk our dogs on the grounds of the abandoned Norwich Hospital. And yes – very haunted. Cold drafts will drift out of the buildings on hot summer days that are colder than the usual basement drafts, in my opinion. In some of the older buildings near the river I feel like I can “hear” voices – not like someone talking to you, but somehow it’s there. Perhaps it’s just in my head? The security used to allow people to walk on the grounds, but sadly, no more.

I live about a quarter mile from the site, and one day during the fall of 07 the security lapsed as the state switched the security business in which it used. I used this time wisely. Normally I work for 97.7 WCTY as a radio tech, and also develop satellite networks for the NOAA. I took some old satellites and radios and hooked them to a sound recorder that had the ability to pick up sound waves, unfrequented by the human ear. I was amazed when I played them back at over 500x the volume in which they were recorded. It sounded like screams, and millions of voices, some begging and pleading for a way out. This place is truly unreal.

Been in about half a dozen times, security sucks. Used to find file folders of documents and leave them on your back doorstep there, John Barry. Missing some truck keys maybe? I got a key ring, also has gate keys and a few unlabeled. Let me know if you would like them back! I dont think the place is haunted at all, I have tons of pics, which is the best part. The photo ops are incredible in the place because it is so run down. The security is a joke and they always just end up calling the cops, who suck also. Pretty hard to catch me when you are surrounded by woods eh?

Uhm to John Barry “SECURITY”!? Yea, NO. If the town was going to hire a security guard you would think they know there basic english spelling/pronounciation. I don’t need to hide from you when indeed i go there once a week and guess what!? Who wasn’t there!? Everyone but you. That place is haunted to, a place I would encourage most ghost hunters to take a look at.

So, I’m from Morgantown, WV, but I have a friend who lives in Groton. Every time we drive past the Norwich State Hospital, I really want to make it a point to sneak in before I head home. It would make me incredibly happy if someone could just guide me to a way I could sneak in to the buildings, and help me out with where not to go..

    Thanks =)

`I worked at Norwich Hospital for eight years and it was closed in the mid 90’s not 80’s. Most of my family worked there throughout the years including my mother, many aunts, cousins, grandfather and grandmother (she died on duty there many years ago in one of the back buildings). It is a place to behold and I’m sure there are many unsettled spirits as I’ve seen EST and a few deaths. It was a very interesting hospital and I learned allot about mental illness but it was also an institution which was not an ideal living condtion for any person, especially when my mother worked there in the mid 50’s. A very sad place.

yep its haunted i used to live there. one night me and some friends visited and this unmarked car came up with a woman in it. she exited the vehicle and had a speech impediment and she was’t all there. she said you shouldnt be heaw…vewy bad ppl used to be heaw…you need to go. she then turned around and left while we just stood there and watched her leave into the mist. weird. freaked me out. connecticut is probably one of the most haunted states in the us.

Thanks to Donna for correcting that mistake about when it closed for good, yes it was the 90s, I worked for the local ambulance service at the time and was taking patients in and out of there on a regular.

As with most SHs the place has the creep factor of 100+ and I can tell you my experiences there have stayed with me for all these years.

It closed, along with several other SH facilities in CT, because beginning in the 80s the prevailing wind of treatment for most mental patients was in a community setting, deinstitutionalizing, they called it. The only SH left in CT is CVH in Middletown. Whiting Forensic is the part of that facility that currently houses the criminally insane. The state discovered after a brutal murder of a 9y/o during the Main St. Sidewalk sale in Middletown by a patient of Whiting Forensic that somehow got a “community pass” that they couldn’t deinstitutionalize everybody and thus not every facility could be closed and they had to provide at least one place where that intense level of care could still be provided. So CVH stayed and the criminally insane from all the facilites went there by the late 90s. Most of the other mentally ill went into group homes, community care (PHP programs) or home to their families.

I have been many times. Its wide open you can pretty much walk in any door they are all open or gone in most places for that matter. Take the train tracks along the water then walk up the hill through the woods and the just run into the first building you see. Everyting is connected by underground tunnels and you will have free run of the place. LOL

sweet, i’m planning on going with some friends soon, i work at a psych hospital for children and am so interested in seeing how things used to look there. I also love ghost hunting and really hope i see something. I’m not worried about the security, it sounds like they don’t do a good job by others posts. I’ll right again if i find anything good.

Be careful what you post as “ways to enter”, security for NSH reviews this site regularly. Most tunnels are blocked now and buildings are all falling apart, be careful if you do make it in…. my parents both worked there until it closed in 1996, some pretty cool stories.

My mom used to work there before she adopted my sister and I. She worked with the criminally insane! Even though she is in her early 70\’s she still remembers everything that happened to her while working there vividly. She would tell us stories about the tunnels, close to the powerhouse, and how they would bring the patients through there! She also told me a story about a man who she walked in on hanging from a ceiling lamp. Before she left she took pictures of his room, which was boarded up because the workers got to frightened and they would hear screams and crying. She also told me about how certain people that we inside the asylum weren\’t even insane and had absolutely no problems mentally! She moved far away to West Hartford to get away from it, because it had truly scarred her for life.
