Haunted Places in Illinois

Elvira is seen walking the halls and looking out the upper windows. She is a beautiful entity with blond hair that falls below her slim waist and is seen wearing a filmy, dancing gown. When young actresses are trying out, the staircase is watched diligently, because on occasion a young actress has the irresistible urge to travel up the staircase to the open portals under the influence of Elvira. She not only hypnotizes performers but also likes to move props, untie scenery flats so they fall over to let the living know that she is there and needed some laughs.

Choate Mental Health and Development Center

All that is left of this once mental health facility is the basement and its tunnels. It’s been reported that if you walk in the tunnels you’ll feel a hand touch your back. Figures of people are also seen in the windows as well as running around the building. The nearby cottages are also extremely haunted by nurses and prior residents and faces appear in the buildings. There is also a report of a devil dog attacking a resident and when the lights were turned back on there was nothing there but scratches all over the person’s body.

Calvary Cemetery – Springfield

An angel statue sits on a grave near the park side entrance of the cemetery and when it’s late she’ll turn around and weep. There are also several large, old trees in this cemetery that move and sway when there is no wind.

Lake Club – Springfield

Lake club is a 1930’s building used by the mafia. Al Capone and his gang killed people there. To this day, you can hear doors closing, and footsteps. People also reported seeing a man and a woman there were murdered there by a jealous husband. This building unfortunately burned down in 2004.

Rock River and 7th Ave in Sterling

Along the bluffs and railroad tracks there have been many ghost sightings. These people either died from the blind corner near the Dillon Museum by being hit by trains or have drowned in the river’s strong currents. When you go down the dead-end road of 7th avenue, you can hear a mother calling for her children and she can be seen walking along the tracks and disappearing into thin air.

Moon Creek Cemetery – Streator

Located just south of the city, this cemetery is home to a hatchet lady. A mother gone insane due to her daughter’s death and now each night when there is a full moon she is seen running around the cemetery, tossing hatchets. It was reported that colored mists were also seen. Often when driving through the gate, people’s vehicles died. When people are present in this cemetery, mysterious fires would start.
