The Bell Witch Legend
In 1817, John Bell a citizen of Robertson County Tennessee, found a monstrous creature in his cornfield, he described it as having the body of a dog and the head of a rabbit. Although he tried to shoot the animal, it disappeared before he could get a shot. Shortly after this encounter Bell and his family began hearing and experiencing very strange things. The sound of something beating the outside of his house was the first of a series of events. Then his children began hearing gnawing sounds and something puling the covers from them.
The legend eventually ends with John Bell being poisoned by the spirit who is able to communicate with them. The spirit reappears several more times throughout the years, and is still said to haunt descendants of the Bell family. The most recent was in 1990 when one of Bells descendants decided to go rabbit hunting. After shooting the rabbit and chasing it into a bush, there was nothing there but a piece of Joel Egbert Bell’s tomb stone.
