Healing with Crystals: Ametrine

Ametrine is a relatively new gemstone. It is unusual in that it is a combination of two gems in one stone. Ametrine retains the separate properties of amethyst and citrine but also includes properties of the combined force of the two powerful crystalline structures, giving it it’s own unique properties as well.

Ametrine is a relatively new gemstone and has no ancient traditions, folklore, or historical significance attached to it. It is a naturally occurring variety of quartz and is an unusual type of stone in that it is a combination of two gems in one stone. It is a mixture of approximately fifty percent amethyst and fifty percent citrine. The yellow-orange part of ametrine is made up of citrine and the violet-purple part of amethyst. The presence of iron in different oxidation states within the crystalline structure also contributes to the unusual variation of color in ametrine. This gemstone occurs in crystalline and massive form.

The Anahi Mine, found in the Sandoval Province of Bolivia, is the world’s major producer of ametrine. The mine became famous in the 17th century when a Spanish conquistador accepted gemstones from it as a dowry upon marrying a princess name Anahi from the Ayoreos tribe. Ametrine was then introduced into Europe as a gift to the Spanish queen. Recently, deposits of ametrine have been found in Brazil and in Hyderabad, India. Some synthetic ametrine is now also manufactured in limited quantities in Russia.

Ametrine retains the separate properties of amethyst and citrine but also includes properties of the combined force of the two powerful crystalline structures, giving it it’s own unique properties as well.
