Aquamariene commonly occurs in large, clean crystals but the value of this gemstone is based on its color and clarity. The deeper, more saturated, or more intense the blue part of the stone is, the more valuable the gem is considered.
Some of the finest specimens of this gemstone come from Russia. One of the largest producers of aquamarine in the world is Brazil. Other localities include Sri Lanka, Zambia, Kenya, Mozambique, Nigeria, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Malawi, Tanzania, Madagascar, and the United States.
The largest specimen of gem quality aquamarine ever discovered was in 1910 in Brazil. It was nineteen inches long, sixteen inches wide, and weighed two hundred forty three pounds. It was cut into smaller stones and yielded over two hundred thousand carats.
