Aragonite is a carbonate mineral that crystallizes in elongated or needle-shaped crystals that are frequently twinned, meaning that they form a specific repeated pattern.
Aragonite is a carbonate mineral that crystallizes in elongated or needle-shaped crystals that are frequently twinned, meaning that they form a specific repeated pattern. This mineral rarely occurs in un-twinned, single crystals. The color range of aragonite includes white, yellow, yellow-gold, green, green-brown, and blue. It’s most unique feature is that it forms in wide variety of methods including:
- Fibrous: Fine, parallel threads; some fibrous formations are flexible and can be bent around.
- Columnar: Parallel, compact, slender, and adjoining.
- Stalactitic: Icicle-like formations.
- Botryoidal: Clusters that resembles grapes.
- Tuberose: “Bubbles” that protrude from a flat surface.
- Flos-Ferri: “Flowers of Iron.” This is a variety of wormlike intergrowths that resemble branching coral.
Aragonite forms in oceans, hot spring deposits, depressions in volcanic rocks, caves, and mines. Inside of caves and mines it is usually formed from precipitating water that traps in inorganic materials. The shell structures of many sea creatures and the main component in pearls is aragonite. The pearlization and iridescent coloring of sea shells, such as abalone, are also composed of this mineral.
Aragonite originates in Molina de Aragon in Guadalajara, Spain where its name is derived from. The second biggest producer of aragonite is Morocco. The crystals found here are reddish colored growths. It is also found in sulfur mines in Sicily, Italy and at Mount Vesuvius, Italy. There is a whole aragonite cave that has been discovered in Slovakia. Other localities include Austria, Scotland, the Carlsbad Caverns in the United States, Japan, and Cumberland, England.
