Magick in The Dark Ages
One common thing about the Dark-Ages was sorcery.
It’s commonness among the people of the time led to many measures that were taken as a failed attempt to completely get rid of satanic practices or sorcery which by many of that time frame were one in the same. These measures them selves led to the agitation of the people of that time. They felt as if their freedom had been taken away by forces beyond their control. As you would expect this did not go over well with the populous and was chief cause of many internal battles and struggles. None the less those who were involved were most often sent to be tortured, which led to increased fear and made sorcerer and witch think a second time in regards to performing any practices of their respective crafts.
The most common form of execution for witches was to be burned at the stake. Afterwards, it become increasingly more common to simply hang them particularly during the inquisition. But still, all of the methods of torture varied from village to village. The bigger the village or city the bigger the options for torture. This led to more suffering while a smaller village would only be able to burn at the stake. As for the origins of medieval sorcery they to this day remain unknown. However it is believed that it may have originated as far back as the Romans and even from the east which fits in to the puzzle due to its resemblance.
Scrolls was the choice of many who chronicled their spell and practices was scrolls. They were widely used and in fact some still exist even today. Witches themselves were very prone to using herbs and animal parts in the potions they believed would extend life and heal as well as other things. The people of these times were particularly afraid of this. Because due to natural disasters and eclipses, earthquakes, etc… most times they blamed these on sorcerers or witches due largely to the belief that they were happening in direct response to their practices and rituals.
Witchcraft and religion were at odds from the word go. As history shows us religion unfortunately yielded much more power than that of witches and thus they could exterminate that minority at their leisure. So the church set out to set an example for the rest of the people, often times this was done by the local priests who would themselves send witches to the stake and command the town folk to watch.
Because of the myths surrounding witches many were happy to see them killed, but nevertheless this too led to injustice when out of petty squabbles people started discovering that retribution could be gotten of an enemy simply by accusing them of witchcraft or sorcery One religion was linked to witchcraft and sorcery that being satanism. As per belief all witches and sorcerers were in league with the devil so were too the satanist who would often align themselves with them in order to gain more power within the dark sect of medieval times.
Ultimately this also led to fear and hardship due to so many witches that it became next to impossible to capture and murder them all. This surprisingly was also a cause of many battles between church and state, as the fear generated from this invariantly ended in war. Hence the death of thousands of witches. To this day it is apparent how witches are viewed as nothing but evil and some people even still fear them. These misguided myths have been transferred from generation to generation all the way up to us which exhibits the true belief of what witches were and are.We frequently portray them as ugly and old which is a contradiction from the reality of it which was most were not old and were not ugly. It is believed that these misinformed people would be tolerated by the church in hopes of making them less liked by the people.
