Mermaid – A Myth or Truth?

Believe it or not but Mermaids do exist in the mind of readers of books and viewers of movies.

Mermaid is a word derived from word “mere” which according to old English is pronounced for “sea” and “maid”.  According to mythological beliefs, mermaid is a living being with the top half of body of a female and torso of a fish.

There are still disputes among the biological experts whether mermaids does exists or not in the past but there have been some discoveries made in between trying to prove their existence. Like the picture below is about the remains of a creature found in Malaysia boosting about the existence of Mermaids. While still experts are in confusion whether to consider it as a Mermaid or other sea creature people do fancy about proving their existence.

With lot of movies produced based on the stories of Mermaids most of the people do believe from childhood that they do exist. Movies like- The little Mermaid, Mermaidia, Sea People, She-Creature, Mermaids and others have added to a different category of movies. While Mermaids is considered as a glamorous creature and a sex symbol for many few consider it as a symbol of luck and black magic.

There does exist story behind Mermaids and the first one appeared in Assyria. Atargatis was a goddess queen who loved one Shepherd, the mortal and the affair ended when Shepherd got killed by her in the process. With grief and guilt she jumped in to the river to live her rest of the life as a fish, but river could not take her divine beauty and she remained as half fish and half human. This same story has been accepted in few countries like Greece and Egypt with different acceptance and twists.

Mermaids have not only affected the screens and dramas but also touched arts and literatures. Paintings, stories, novels and idols related to Mermaids are still available in the market. Astrologers too have some beliefs related to Mermaids and their lucky charm. In years to follow there will be more discoveries following this ancient mythology and the story will go on further.

    that’s not a mermaid, it’s a Jenny Haniver, a twisted body of a stingray. It is photographed from an angle that makes it look human-sized. You can sea a leaf under its head as a reference for size.
