Moore House Haunting: The Axe Murders of Villisca

In the quiet town of Villisca, Iowa, a family of six and two young friends were brutally murdered. Since their deaths, strange happenings take place within the home.

In the early morning of June 1912, Mary Peckham noticed that her neighbor’s home, the Moore’s was eerily quiet. She was used to hearing Sarah Moore’s children while Sarah set about her chores. Mary approached the house and knocked on the door. No one answered. She knocked again expecting someone to come to the door, but once again she was met with silence.

Mary tried the door, but found it was locked. Concerned Mary decided to call J.B. Moore’s brother, Ross. When Ross finally came to check on his brother, what was found would become one of the biggest unsolved crimes in history.

Upon further inspection of the house, Ross would find two bloody bodies in one of the children’s bedrooms. These would be the bodies of Lena and Ina Stillinger, friends of the family’s children, who had come over the night before after a program ended at their church.

Ross screamed at Mary to call for the sheriff. When the sheriff arrived, six more bodies would be discovered. In the upstairs bedrooms were the bodies of J.B., Sarah, and their four children; Herman, Catherine, Boyd, and Paul.

The massacre of the Moore family and Stillinger girls came as a shock to the quiet Villisca, Iowa town. Everyone had been brutally hacked to death with an axe. The force of the trauma to J.B. and his wife, left hack marks upon the ceiling of their bed. The brutality of the attacks was prevalent on the complete crushing of some of the victim’s skulls.

Such a macabre murder left the town speechless. And to this day, the murders of these people have gone unsolved. Due to such heinous atrocities, the spirits seem to haunt the house. Since the deaths, people who have stayed in the house have reported creepy disturbances.

Children seem to laugh or cry, while tiny hands playfully tap at your legs and feet. Objects seem to move about on their own or fall. Doors seem to shut as if someone does not want them open. Light breezes fall upon the skin when windows are drawn. Curtains move. For those of you who are brave enough to stay within the renovated home or go on a ghostly tour, one can. But many are unwilling to stay for the night as sometime blankets are tugged on or completely yanked off. Personally, I prefer the tour.
