Mysterious Monsters
This article is a brief survey of some famous creatures like Bigfoot and the Loch Ness Monster.
Does the Loch Ness Monster really exist? Are we nearing closure on Bigfoot? What is the “Goatsucker?. Is there a living dinosaur in Africa? What was the winged thing with glowing eyes that terrorized a small town in West Virginia for a year? What has haunted the New Jersey Pinelands for over two hundred years?
Things may be coming to a head for Bigfoot, aka Sasquatch. New high-tech detection methods, increased sightings, amazing photographs and new DNA evidence imply that we may be getting closer to learning the truth about the legendary creature. A resident of Sarasota, Florida may have snapped detailed, clear photos of the Skunk Ape. This is what Bigfoot is called in the Sunshine State. An anthropology professor has been studying what might be a body imprint of Sasquatch in the ground.
The Loch Ness Monster may be the most famous monster in the world. “Nessie” has been reported for hundreds of years but it was not until 1933 that it gained international fame. On May 2 of that year, an Inverness, Scotland newspaper ran a story about how Mrs. Aldie Mckay encountered the creature. She described it as having a long neck, a horse-like head and a humped back. With a dark or grey skin color, Nessie’s weight was estimated at 2500 pounds. It was about forty feet long.
From the giant Loch Ness monster we turn to the diminutive but vicious Chupacabras. Three feet tall, and with blazing eyes and sharp teeth, it has been seen in Puerto Rico, Central America, Chile and the United States. Chupacabras has even been spotted in Illinois, New Jersey and Maryland. Its name is Spanish for “Goatsucker” because when it first terrorized Puerto Rico, it preyed on farm animals. Chupacabras has been sighted in alleys, trees and bushes.
Similar to the Chupacabras is the Jersey Devil. Only three and a half feet tall with a head of a dog and the face of a horse, the Devil has haunted the New Jersey Pinelands for the past 260 years. Over two thousand people have seen it. The Jersey Devil has caused schools and factories to close down, and terrorized towns. Could the Devil and the Chupacabras be related?
Another winged creature, albeit larger, is the Mothman. Sightings of the Mothman, described as seven feet tall with featherless wings spanning ten feet, were made in 1966 and 1967 in Point Pleasant, West Virginia. Its most distinguishing feature was its red, glowing eyes. However, some witnesses reported that Mothman had no head.
There may be a living dinosaur in central Africa. People in the Congo, Cameroon, and Gabon have long told of an animal with a long neck and tail, and round tracks with three claws. They call it Mokele-Mbembe. Possibly a sauropod dinosaur, Mokele-Mbembe may be thirty-two feet long with a ten-foot-long neck and a ten-foot-long tail. The color is reddish-brown. Its tracks are three feet across and the distance between tracks is eight feet.
