Premonitions & The Afterlife
Scientists are studying whether there is any truth in the claims made by thousands every year who claim to have had experinces with the afterlife and beyond…
Many people are adamant that they have caught glimpses of their future or perhaps even near death experiences. Some even go as far to state they have caught a vision of how they will die-or beyond.
So what is all the hysteria that plaques some people who talk about having premonitions or visions of the afterlife?
Near Death Experiences, or NDE, is something that millions of people claim across the world to have experienced. Some vision a bright light at the end of a tunnel to meeting dead relatives.
It all sounds crazy and wonderful and weird figments of our imagination. But today scientists are starting to take the subject serious and investigate further. And we are not just talking about the psychics or ghost-busters of this world.

Reports of Near Death Experiences are becoming increasingly common and this is partly down to hospitals being able to resuscitate people more effectively. Over 15% of cardiac-arrest victims are successfully revived and many claim to have had a glimpse of the afterlife. Because of this and the reports being bounded around, scientists are beginning to take note and are beginning to wonder if there is any real truth, or evidence, of premonitions and the afterlife.
Let us look at the statistics involved. Dr. Sam Parnia a specialist of Critical Care Medicine at Southampton University is currently conducting a study into this strange phenomenon. The study is taking place at 25 hospitals in the UK and US.
Approximately 15,000 patients over the next 3 years will be brought to these hospitals suffering from cardiac arrest. Of this number approximately 1,500 will be resuscitated. From this number the expectation is that a good number will claim that they have endured some form of out-of-body experience whilst they were dead.
Parnia intends to try various experiments in which to gather “strong” data for the claims. It is his intention to hide objects high up in the operating rooms where the patients are being resuscitated. The idea is that any person claiming to have “risen” up will see the objects and then the reports can be verified for accuracy upon questioning what they saw.
Not only will this help establish whether the out-of-body experiences are not figments of the imagination, but it will lead strong credibility to the actual existence of NDEs.
It appears to be a simple enough idea and without the need for equipment we usually see in Hollywood films by the specialist ghost busters. But according to Dr. Parnia the medical profession takes the study of what happens to patients when they die very seriously. He goes onto state that as scientists we understand very little of what happens during the dying process.
He sums this up by stating that what we know is simply basic. He states that death is not a specific moment and it is a process that begins when the heart stops beating; the lungs cease to work and the brain stops working. That is clinical death.
Still he goes on to say that there is a period of time which can last from just a few seconds to more than an hour, where medical intervention can restart the heart. Parnia sees this time period as a unique opportunity into seeing what we are likely to experience during the dying process.
He hopes the study will give scientists and medical experts a clearer picture of better understanding death.
Psychologists are pretty much divided on the NDE experience. Psychologist Professor Christopher French does say that many people experience NDE phenomena and such experiences can be totally life changing for many.
“But there are two points of view about it”, he says. “Some people believe NDEs are evidence that the mind and soul becomes separated from the body, and gives some sort of glimpse of the afterlife.”
He then goes onto to mention the other point of view that in his opinion the most plausible explanation of near death experiences is that they are essentially visions of a dying brain. He states that people probably “feel” as though things are happening due to the strange happenings of the brain at the time.
In any event he was quick to add that as a society we shouldn’t dismiss NDEs as dying is a part of life. It is something that requires much more extensive research before anyone can give a true answer as to whether they are real.
