Problems With Fermi’s Paradox

A literal interpretation of Fermi’s Paradox embraces a number of invalid assumptions. It therefore has irreconcilable problems, putting it in conflict with reality. Some misguided individuals attempt to use Fermi’s Paradox as if it were proof that Earth is the only home of intelligent life in the Universe. They are erroneous and likely misunderstand the original point of Professor Fermi’s question.

Fermi’s Argument Contains a Clue to it’s Own Unraveling

Ironically, by Fermi’s own arguments the entire galaxy should have been fully “colonized” millions, if not billions of years ago. However, like the ebb and flow of a tidal wave, colonization could likewise occur in waves of time. The beings of the earliest waves on the billions of years ago scale, would no longer be among us, at least physically, for they would have long since either fallen into extinction, devolved into non-sentient life forms no longer capable of space flight technology, or ascended into non corporeal “energy” or purely spiritual forms. If such ancient beings do still live, they would currently be so far advanced beyond our state of existence that they’d have even less interest in us than we do in the tiny bugs we crush beneath our feet.

For billions of year, there could have been several colonization waves, representing the rise and fall of scores of galactic cultures, some lasting over periods spanning hundreds of millions of years. Yet even with this type of scenario there could be long spans of “non-colonizing” time intervals between some of these waves. It is even conceivable that some of these colonizing dry spells could last millions of years, and we could currently be in the middle of one of those periods. However, it is equally conceivable we live during one of the waves. Given these concepts, it would be reasonable to think that during the time spans of these waves, various attempts would be made at the establishment of “galactic laws”. Among these theoretical laws it stands to reason, that rules of first contact might be included. As seen in popular fiction, such rules of first contact may indeed include certain prerequisites before an intelligent race is ready for introduction into the galactic community. Simply put, we have not yet met those prerequisites. Until we do, at best our status could be considered potential for eventual contact, or if we can’t grow beyond our violent natures then we might be, at worst, slated for eradication, or merely allowed to self-immolate.

Due to our primitive status, we could be held in a quarantined or “nature preserve” mode, shielded from open contact, or for that matter open conquest. So, an invasion type occurrence like seen in such movies as War of the Worlds , or Independence Day , would likely be prevented from happening to us. However, by the same token, sometimes folks are known to break the rules, so such galactic laws might not necessarily prevent scenarios like a secretive approach. Some could be living among us, disguised as Human, merely to experience what it is like to be Human, while others might have more nefarious motivations for their surreptitious penetrations of our world. Infiltrations like we see dealt with in such science fiction television series as Invasion or novels like Robert A. Heinlein s Puppet Masters or such movies as They Live , and Invasion of the Body Snatchers show us just a few ways extraterrestrials could be among us right now without our official or public knowledge of it. While such UFO abduction researchers as Dr. David M. Jacobs’ International Center for Abduction Research (ICAR), and Bud Hopkins’ Intruders Foundation (IF) seek to persuade us that the invasion is currently underway, and has been for some time. Our incredulity about such possibilities could actually serve to help such hypothetical abducting intruders, if real, as they live among us virtually uncontested. Both of these researchers use a rather controversial method of hypnotic memory regression therapy to gather data. And while we can not call their data definitive, it is remarkably consistent, and if true leads to some rather disquieting conclusions. These would be that large numbers of individuals cross culturally worldwide are regularly abducted, primarily against their will, and are routinely subjected to medical probing and reproductive manipulations, which appears to include a major project involving the creation of Human/Alien hybrids. You can hear an interview with Dr. David Jacobs, when he was a guest, (10/16/2008 7:00 PM), at Blog Talk Radio on the archives of the ParaNexus Universe channel. In this interview Dr. Jacobs proposed that the Human/Alien hybrid program features a long term goal of these abducting aliens, known by some as the Grays, seeking to control and even ultimately replace Humanity with their hybrids, who are growing to appear increasingly indistinguishable from common Human. He believes many of these increasingly Human looking hybrids have already infiltrated Human cultures the world over, living among us, and influencing our societies increasingly over time. What he basically describes is a secret passive invasion, via a gradual infiltration of these hybrids indistinguishable from “normal” Humans. Dr. Jacobs sees “their” agenda as completely self-centered, and not with our best interests in heart. The data of this researcher and others in the field of UFO abduction investigations are compelling, but at this point in time inconclusive. Much additional research is called for before any real viable conclusions can really be drawn on this matter. Unfortunately, conventional science is quite antagonistic toward this research, delegating it purely to the fringe.

Some of the more conspiratorial bent have suggested that our own government is secretly in collusion with these abducting “Grays”, looking the other way in exchange for advanced technology. We can only hope this conspiracy theory is false, the product of over active imaginations. However if true, it would serve to make the alleged “cover up” more understandable. While other governments the world over are declassifying their UFO files, will the United States follow in those footsteps or continue the denials? Time will tell.

In the mean time, misuse of Fermi’s Paradox to support the questionable assumption of no evidence for an extraterrestrial presence continues to dominate our conventional scientific community and mainstream media, in the face of mounting evidence to the contrary.

Excellent foundational piece. My only question (maybe a sequel article?) is why some of the evidence that we have been visited by ET’s for thousands of years wasn’t included. The Dogon tribe knowing about Sirius B before we (modern science) did because the “sky people” told them is just one of many such instances. Any one instance might be explained away, but giving the sum of these occurrences in my mind makes that unlikely. Anyway, again, an excellent piece attacking the flaws of the Fermi paradox.

I like it, well written. I still do not beleive in other living beings in the univerese. I do beleive in an infinite worlds and creations on a different level of our existence ( different Frequency ), as we live on a certain frequency or level and other worlds live on another.

I am a spiritual writer, please read my articles and in the near future I will bw writing on the Physical Plane (which we Know) and other planes that we Yet to discover.

Very funny article. Completely backward logic. I happen to be working on an article that is almost exactly the opposite in tone to yours. We are unique, and the universe itself will not survive unless we do, and find a solution to universal entropy.

Actually Joe, my logic is not backward; it is merely different than yours. From a purely objective scientific standpoint neither of us possesses sufficient evidence to draw a definitive conclusion. That being the case, we can only draw tentative conclusions. Obviously, you draw a different tentative conclusion than I do. And there is good reason for that. It’s not because of either logic or illogic, but rather the preconceptions or beliefs we each carry into our analysis of the data at hand.

Included with the raw data most tend to seamlessly weave in their beliefs. I believe the Universe must be teeming with life. The same principles that lead to life here on the Earth must hold true everywhere in the Universe where the conditions are ripe. Likewise, I believe intelligent life is equally prodigious throughout the Universe. Apparently, based on what little you say in your comment, I gather your beliefs about intelligent life differ from mine. So, you and I each utilize approximately the same raw data and mix it together with our beliefs and come to different conclusions. However, what neither of us is doing is pure scientific logic. We each use logic together with a bias. For pure science does not include beliefs. Taking on a purely objective point of view sheds the bias perspective. And frankly, that is a very difficult thing to do, for often our bias will creep in underneath the shadows or our own awareness. With pure science and that alone, a final conclusion can not be drawn at this time, therefore pure science can only say the answer to the question, “Do other intelligent beings exists elsewhere in the Universe?” is inconclusive. At this point in time, what little bit of data that we do have on the subject is insufficient, and without more data, no purely scientifically logical conclusion can be drawn. In other words, the Jury is still out on this one, and will be until a great deal more data can be gathered to shed enough light one way or the other. Until then the best any of us can do, including you and me, is speculate. And hey, that’s fine with me. Speculating is fun. You speculate that we are unique, i.e. alone in the Universe. I speculate that there are many other intelligent life forms spread throughout the Universe, but even with that said I too think we are unique among them.

There may be many different elements on the periodic table, but each is unique, each with its own properties and function in the Universe. We couldn’t have the Universe as we know it, without each of them. Just like that, each of the myriad beings of the Cosmos is unique and each has a place in the Cosmic Drama that is life. Therefore, every one is just as important, just as significant. Being one among many does not diminish us.
