Prophets of Warning
Can people really see into the future?
When man first stepped on earth he was given five basic senses; sight, hearing, taste, smell and the sense of touch. But some people have been gifted with a special power: a sixth sense. A sense which allows them to see things and happenings which are denied other people.
St John The Divine in The Revelations saw a book with seven seals. The sixth seal when opened revealed a prophecy telling of the end of the world. Many other people have experienced events less spectacular, but nonetheless far beyond the spectrum of normal life. Mediums& Spiritualists Paranormal research didn’t begin seriously until the late eighteen hundreds. Henry Sedgwick a well known philosopher founded a society in London called the Society for Psychical Research. It’s main aim was to study carefully the various claims of mediums and spiritualists. Later, in 1927, Dr.J.B.Rhine (1895-1980) founded the Parapsychology Laboratory at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina, America. ESPThe miraculous visions from down the ages were in four groups. Telepathy, which are pictures or messages sent between two people. Clairvoyance, the knowledge of events and happenings. Precognition, foretelling the future, and retro cognition, the knowledge of the past. All of these are now called extrasensory perception, or ESP; a term carefully coined by Dr.J.B.Rhine in 1934. Rhine focused mainly on precognition, clairvoyance and telepathy. He used special cards for his experiments, then stated the results were statistical evidence and ESP was possible.¢His findings were never generally accepted. After 38 years of research the laboratory closed down.
Psychic research continued at the University of Utrecht in the Netherlands, and today scientists study all similar unusual events under the one heading; parapsychology. Although some scientists see little or no value in continued parapsychology research, the American Association of Science does.
It has admitted the Parapsychology Association as an affiliated member society. Also in America, research into telepathic dreams by the National Institute of Mental Health has been given grant support.
Probably the highest consistent performer in tests of ESP is Pavel Stepanek. From May 1967 to March 1968 he achieved odds of more than 100 octillion to one against nominating hidden white and green cards. The results were not published. DreamsEvidence of parapsychology is found in many archives. Well documented reports of psychic dreams or visions followed by disasters such as earthquakes, train crashes etc’ are numerous.
After an intense study of train crashes, W E Cox noted that all trains running on the day of the accidents carried fewer passengers than on any other day. Cox concluded that many people probably had dreamt or had visions about the accident and didn’t travel that day. PredictionsOn December 6 1978, a Dundee, Scotland newspaper told a strange story about Edward Pearson, an unemployed Welsh prophet. He was charged at the Perth Sheriff Court with travelling on the Inverness to Perth train without paying. He said the journey had been urgent as he had to see the Minister of the Enviroment as soon as possible. He was travelling to warn him of an earthquake due to hit Glasgow very soon. No doubt the headline story wasn’t taken too seriously by the newspaper’s readers; and even less seriously by “the powers that be”. Three weeks later an earthquake hit in the middle of the night causing serious damage in Glasgow and areas of Scotland.

When put to carefully controlled tests, parapsychology has turned out to be a load of wishful thinking and poorly controlled research. Nobody can see into the future, and much of what is considered psychic foreknowledge is nothing but sheer coincidence or reinterpretation after the fact.
