The House The Spirits Built: A Monument to Immortality
Mrs. Winchester found her strange vocation not long after her husband, William, died in 1881. At that time she inherited about $20 million, as well as an income of about $1,000 a day, from William’s holdings in the Winchester Repeating Arms Co. But unconsoled by her wealth, grieving for her husband, and troubled by the death of their only child, Mrs. Winchester sought comfort from a spiritualist in Boston.

For 38 years Sarah Winchester went to sleep with the sound of hammering all around her. No lullaby could have soothed her more. Mrs. Winchester, a widow, was neither deaf nor, by most accounts, particularly eccentric. The constant noise was simply part of her life’s special mission.

The medium’s message was straightforward but alarming. A considerable part of the Winchester fortune had come from sales of the Winchester ’73 rifle, “the gun that won the West.” The souls of the riffle’s victims – and there were thousands of them – had revenged themselves by taking Mrs. Winchester’s family from her. Her life would also be cursed, said the medium, unless she bought a house, enlarged it, and continued building it for the rest of her life. As long as there was the sound of hammering, Mrs. Winchester would be untroubled by evil spirits.

I guess Mrs. Winchester was just plain eccentric and there were no such spirits who engineered the house for her. A very well-written article.
