The Mystery of The Bermuda Triangle

There is a place in the Atlantic Ocean, near the coast of Florida, U.S.A., where ships and airplanes seem to disappear more than anywhere else on earth. This area is called the Bermuda Triangle since it forms a triangle between Miami, Bermuda and Puerto Rico. More than a hundred planes and ships have disappeared there since 1945 and more than a thousand persons have been lost into nowhere, as if the lost planes had flown into a hole in the sky or the ships had been suddenly drawn down into a huge whirlpool or been taken away from the surface of the sea. The strangest thing about the disappearances is that nothing is ever found no survivors, no lifeboats, no remains and no sign of the mystery left on the water. No bodies have been found in the water of have been carried by the tide onto the beach.

The biggest single loss of airplanes happened in December 1945 when five U.S. Navy aircraft from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, flying together with a total crew of 14, sent a radio message to their base that their flying instruments were not working and that they did not know where they were. The base called back to them to follow the sun west, but they replied that they could not see the sun, although the weather was good. “Even the ocean doesn’t look as it should,” the pilots added. Finally, they said that they could not hear the base, although the base tower could still hear them talking about strange “white water”. The last thing the tower heard was: “Don’t come after us…. It looks like….” and later there was silence. In the meantime, a rescue plane had been sent to help them. But the rescue plane sent the tower just one message, saying that it was approaching the place where the planes had been lost, and then, when it entered the area, it also disappeared and was never heard from again. After an investigation that lasted several months, a U.S. Navy officer said: “It is a complete mystery. It is almost as if they had flown to Mars!”

Sometimes a plane or a ship will disappear right after sending a message saying that everything is all right. During Christmas of 1963 the pilot of a DC-3 passenger plane, coming into Miami for a landing, asked for landing instructions and then said to the control tower, “Would you believe it? The passengers are still singing Christmas carols!” Then suddenly the plane radio went off the air. Neither the airplane, its crew nor its passengers was ever heard of again.
