Situated at Baalbek on a lush, high plain, 53 miles from Beirut in Lebanon, stand the ruins of a group of Roman temples famous for the beauty and grace of their architecture.

Constructed in the first century A.D., the temples stand on a raised platform and command magnificent views of the countryside below. But it is not only the setting that is spectacular; surrounding the temples is a massive stone wall that baffles experts even today.

At its western end lie three of the largest cut blocks of stone in the world. Transporting and placing them in their horizontal would pose an insurmountable problem even to modern engineers using the most sophisticated machinery technology can provide. Yet these stones have been in position for almost 2,000 years. Despite the technical expertise of the Romans, there is no similar example of such astonishing skill anywhere else in their former empire. The great stones of Baalbek are unique.

The three colossal stones are known as the Trilithon. If stood on one end, each stone would be as high as a five- or six-story house. The largest stone is an about 64 by 14 by 12 feet and weighs some 800 tons. Cut from a quarry about a mile away, each block was transported to the site at Baalbek, and lifted up some 25 feet to its final position onto the top of a platform of smaller stones.

The Devil’s Stones

Today few industrial cranes would be capable of such a feat, yet the three stones were placed so precisely, it is impossible to insert the blade of a knife between the joints. No wonder that in earlier time’s people speculated that the stones must have been hewn and positioned by the devil. Even today some people believe that there must be a supernatural explanation.

The mystery deepens when one learns that in the quarry lies another great block, larger than the stones forming the Trilithon and weighing approximately 1,000 tons. No one knows why this last block was never used in the construction of the temples. To this day the explanation that it was just too heavy for the people who had already cut, moved, and placed the largest blocks in the history of the world remains unsatisfactory.

Great article and pictures. There are many mysteries from those times that still jolts the understanding of some of the greatest minds of today. The great pyramids are another example. Very well done friend.
