The Third Eye Fact or Fiction

 For centuries we have questioned the concept of the third eye, which is mentioned in the bible in revelations, as the seven chakras, in Kabbalah as the Ajna chakra and most importantly Hindu and Buddhism from which it supposedly originates, tradition having it as the source of hidden powers and clairvoyance, however; for along time it was nothing more than speculation,with no real facts to back it up.

 From doctors to philosophers, they all wanted to know the truth about this so called third eye and delving deeper, it was eventually discovered that the third eye was possibly linked to the pineal gland. In some reptiles the pineal is an eye with both a lens and retina covered by skin or scales. In other animals it is a light sensitive gland under a thin shell of skull bone. In humans the tiny gland lies deep within the center of the brain,although, for humans its function proved difficult to find and for centuries people pondered over what this gland was used for, however; the curious kept trying and in 1958, Aaron Lerner of Yale university discovered it as the gland that produces melatonin, a hormone that acts as a sedative, controlling the sleep process.

 Through scientific research, animals are known to be sensitive to light from this gland/eye and are able to measure the angle and intensity of the sun or light so that the internal body creates a rhythm aligning it with the natural changes in the days length all year round. For many species this is indispensable because it is used not only for navigational purposes but it also regulates the reproductive cycles and matches skin color with the environment.

 If humans are based on animals the pineal gland would explain a lot, such as why strong sunlight affects our spiritual levels, for most people sunlight elevates happiness. It would also explain why the start of spring brings thoughts of mating. If this is in fact the case, then it truly would make the pineal gland psychic because it is then evaluating and processing environmental information that we are otherwise unaware of.

 Occult schools today link the pineal gland with the crown chakra, the vortex, a so called whirlwind in which spiritual and psychic energies are said to enter the person through.

 The pineal gland is also linked to enlightenment,however; high seratonin levels produce feelings of wellbeing and tranquility and the pineal gland needs seratonin in order to create melatonin, thereby, enlightenment could easily be the chemicals in our bodies creating this enlightenment which would in fact be linked to the pineal gland.

 So in the finality of it all we are still left with the question, does the third eye actually exist? Well believers say it does and if we look at the scientific research it certainly is pointing in that direction.
