Do you like haunted houses on Halloween? What about creepy “fun houses” at the State Fair? Are you into being scared almost “to death”?

Most people love horror movies and creepy TV Shows like Friday the 13th.

People like feeling creeped out, sitting on the edge of their seats clasping their hands across their eyes and peeking through their fingers. It is something deep within the human psyche that almost craves exploring the unknown and haunted.

Around the world there are reports of 100’s of haunted houses, buildings and places that attract many visitors each year. Here are the Top five Really Weird and Creepy Haunted Places you might chance to visit this Halloween.

  1. Eastern State Penitentiary-Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

The gothic and ominous Eastern State Penitentiary in Philadelphia, Pa. is reported to be America’s most haunted prison. It was built in 1829 and was originally meant to house 250 inmates in solitary confinement. However over 1,700 prisoners were crammed into the cells during its peak years of use. Like many places of emotional misery and death, the prison is reported haunted by many former inmates.

[Al Capone was incarcerated there on a weapons possession conviction in 1929. During his stay, many said Capone was tormented by the ghost of James Clark, one of the men he had murdered in the infamous St. Valentine's Day massacre.]

  2. Queen Mary-Long Beach, California

The Queen Mary luxury cruise ship, now a hotel is full of haunting reports and very active ghosts according to visitors who sailed on her and by people staying in her rooms now that she has been made into a hotel. Her sailing days ended in the 1960’s and the city of Long Beach, California bought the vessel in 1967 and transformed into a hotel.

Haunted areas of the ship include: the engine room where knocking noises and banging on the pipes around the door has been heard and recorded by many people, the front desk area of the hotel, visitors have seen the ghost of a “lady in white” and ghosts of children are seen around the ship’s pool all the time.

  3. The Waverly Hills Sanatorium-Louisville, Kentucky

The Waverly Hills Sanatorium in Louisville, Kentucky has been investigated by literally scores of paranormal investigators, who all come to the same conclusion…….this place is haunted by lots of spirits and tormented souls. The hospital was originally dedicated to the treatment of tuberculosis patients (“the white death”), a disease that was common in the early 20th Century.

Estimates say over 63,000 people died at the sanatorium from both tuberculosis and strange reports of severe mistreatment of patients coupled with eerie, highly questionable experiments and procedures have left the rooms and halls full of ghosts.

  4. Civil War Battlefield-Gettysburg, Pennsylvania

The Civil War battlefield of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania is a place many visitors have reported seeing ghosts of soldiers haunting the battle grounds. The Devil’s Den battle ground area is said to have been haunted before the fight that took place there on the second day of Gettysburg and it is there that many ghostly encounters take place to this day. You only have to walk through the strange rock formation area and chills will go down your spine.

  5. Bell Witch Cave-Adams, Tennessee

Last, but definitely not least is The Bell Witch Cave in Adams, Tennessee. The haunting began in 1817 and they were most spectacular and included spectral creatures, disembodied voices, unbelievable violence and ultimately the death of John Bell. These phenomena were attributed to the infamous Bell Witch. The cave is said to be where “the witch” vanished to when the haunting of the Bell family ended. It has been attached to many strange events and occurrences in modern time. [I went there once during my college days…really spooky…won't go again.]

Good info – as I am attracted to the weird & bizarre – but in truth I would never visit these places (I would probably be scared to death).
