The True Horror of Amityville
A brief article explaining the events that surround the idea of Amityville being one of the most haunted places in the world…
Butch was found guilty on six counts of second-degree murder, and sentenced to twenty five years in prison. He remains incarcerated at the New York State of Corrections.
In December 1975, just thirteen months after the terrible murders, George and Kathy Lutz, along with their children, moved into 112 Ocean Avenue. The property was beautiful, typical of Dutch Colonial houses built. It boasted a river view, a boathouse, and a swimming pool. The house was even more attractive when the price was considered, a reported $80,000 at the time.

George and Kathy outside their new home
George and Kathy were aware of the dark history of the home, and so Kathy decided to have the house blessed by a local Catholic priest. The priest left the house in fear, after he heard a voice boom at him, “Get out,”
At the time he did not tell the owners in his haste to leave, however he called to tell Kathy a few days later, but the line was cut off because of static. The priest also reported blisters over his hands as a result of his visit.
The Lutz’s were then plagued by paranormal activity, such as red welts on Kathy’s body, opening doors, green slime oozing from the walls and a demonic invisible friend for their daughter.

Kathy’s daughter’s drawing of her invisible friend
After trying to cleanse the house of its spirits on two occasions, the Lutz’s finally moved out of their home, leaving their belongings behind.
The Lutz’s reports have been vehemently opposed by many people who believe their story to be a hoax. Books have been written that contest the Lutz’s account of what happened at Amityville.
The house was investigated by paranormal investigators in 1976, and it later emerged that they caught a photograph of a supposed ‘demonic boy’.

Nobody knows what really happened the night Ronald Defoe murdered his family, and nobody knows what happened in the wake of it. Some people say the Devil lives in Amityville, and caused Butch Defeo to murder his family, some say it’s all terrible lies that cloud the original tragedy. What do you think, are you a believer?

Great piece Emily. Amityville has always been fascinating to me. Of course the movie version was very sensationalized.

I watched the movie too. I got a little confused here…was the fact that revealed in the movie real facts or just something that the producer add on? about the cult and stuff…
p/s: interesting article *wink*

This is an interesting article. It is pity that nobody can tell where the truth is. On the same time it is very sad all that happened.

Think the cult stuff was one of the exagerated parts, but then who knows? the movie blew so many things out of proportion…
Thanks for your comments guys, your feedback and thoughts are enjoyed…

i watched a show on discovery and showed the picture of the “demon boy”. it looks to me like an adult on their knees in a plaid shirt with glasses on. the reflection of the bulb on the lenss explains why it appears not to have eyes.

Great article! I am not sure if I am a believer. I tend to think DeFoe did it on his own.

I am currently mentioning this event as well in my Ghost posts I find this story very interesting. But as for some of the details a bit skeptical. i have read the book as well as watched all the movies and spin offs on it. I find the demon part or possession very credible.

Every time I see a house with those unique windows I get goosebumps.

i think the whole thing was based on past curses. it is logical that if someone were to get tortured in a home and witchcraft/or any type of spirit magnet had occured that the spirits that stayed there would have fury. People need to start using common sense!

You have a few things wrong. The priest didn’t immediatley leave. After he heard the ‘Get Out’, he continued blessing the house, and nothing interesting happened afterwards. He simply mentioned to the Lutzs not to use that room as their bedroom.
Her ‘invisible friend’ was a pig with red eyes, and it wasn’t so invisible. The rest of the family, on numerous occassions, commented about seeing it.
The priest also didn’t tell them to leave. They did that of their own accord. He simply refused to do an exorcism for them when the asked. And there is no evidence of a call being cut off by static between the Lutzs and the priest.
Did you just watch the movie, or make up things after reading an Uncyclopedia article?

An interesting article. In cases such as these, the truth is never plain and simple. I am sure possession can occur but as regards the truth on the Amityville story, I think it will remain a mystery.

I found this article most interesting. I’ve seen the movie many a time although I believe no-one will ever know what really happened there. But, this tale no doubt will make for a viable urban legend and the myth surrounding Amityville will never be forgotten, it is no doubt good for business too!

I saw this movie a long time ago. It is a real scary story, and mostly believable. There are some real crazies out there.

Living in South Africa, we see this kind of brutality all the time. Sometimes its even worse than what occured at Amityville. So does that mean the criminals here are possessed? I think Butch just used this as an excuse after he got off of his trip. He may also have been having hillucinations from the drugs, and thought he was seeing demons etc. All in all, I think he needed a shrink. I also think that the mind is powerful to see things, when you truelly believe there should be something there.
