The World’s Most Stunning Crop Circles
Crop circles have always been an exciting phenomenon. While some people believe that they are formed by UFOs because they’re too perfect to be from this world, others are convinced that they’re the creation of talented men and women who go out in the middle of the night and secretly produce these artistic displays.
Of course there is also that well publicised event of 2 men (Doug Bower and Dave Chorley) from Southampton in England who confessed in 1991 that they created a few of them as a prank.
Whatever your belief, crop circles are undoubtedly one of the most fascinating and stunningly beautiful patterns made without the stroke of a paint brush. Most of these circles are found in England, and the patterns are made by flattening crops like wheat, rapeseed, barley, corn and rye, but not to the point of breaking them entirely, thus the crops then go on to grow normally.

Cambridgeshire, 2001

Wiltshire, 2004
The earliest crop circle seems to have been in the 17th century in England. This image showed the Devil cutting a round design in a field of oats.

This is a very unusual one found in Payerne in Switzerland in 2007.
In the late 1980s the English countryside became alive with regular occurrences of crop circles. They shot up literally overnight and made quite an impact both to tourists and locals alike. In 1996 a farmer on whose land a crop circle appeared, charged a fee to the vast number of people who were flooding into the tiny village to see it. He eventually pocketed £30,000 in four weeks, when the value of his crop if it had been harvested, would’ve been worth around £150.00

To date there have been more than 12,000 crop circles discovered around the world. As well as in England they have occurred in Russia, Japan, Canada and the US.
Here is a fabulous, but rare one from Tennessee in America.

Crop circles have even made their mark in popular media. In an episode of Seinfeld, Jerry tells a woman that he’s responsible for crop circles just so she’d be interested in him. The X-Files is a favourite show of mine, and in the episode called “All Things,” Mulder travels to England to investigate these mysterious artworks.
Here are some more unusual ones from England for you to enjoy.

I’ve never actually seen a crop circle in real life, even though one of the “hot spots” seems to be near to where I live. However, if one does occur, man-made or not, like those people in 1996 in Wiltshire, I would certainly be one of the first handing over my money to the farmer, to catch a glimpse of this fantastic occurrence.

“man-made or not” ?? Haha, of course they are man-made. Interesting to look at for sure, but definitely not signs of aliens.

@hellman
and you know this how? not to say that this is definite work of man or extra terrestrial, but without any proof of either and certainly the possibility that it is done by both, you can’t simply state that it is not ‘alien’ on empty presumptions.

@ Milander,
(S)he’s just saying – don’t discard the possibility that they are of alien origin. Of course the mistake is to presume that the likelihood of each option is 50-50. I’d say they’re very much more likely to be man-made than not.

Great article and I am glad you wrote it. This topic always messed with my brains. Some say it is man made, some say it is not possible. Which one to believe? Some of these designs look way too complex to be man made. But then again (forgot the name) there was someone in the USA who did a portrait of the Mona Lisa in his field.

You folks who doubt the extra terrestrial origin of these are blind. These are made by something beyond Human, maybe even God himself so that we will seek his mystery.
-Have you ever seen one that was messed up? I know humans usually need to practice things before they get them right
-The crops are kept alive and continue to grow and bear fruit even after they are affected.
-Have you ever seen them up close? they are woven intricately. Some Firefox geeks tried to make one that wasn’t nearly so complex and huge it took them literally all night and all day, and there were several involved and these were smart folks.
In conclusion those who think this is of human origin are lying to themselves because they are clearly afraid of learning something.

i like the thought of crop circles being real but i just can’t really believe that actual aliens would spend time “cutting our grass” when they could be doing things much better unless this is just a relaxing thing to do and watch us act franticly while trying to wrap our feeble minds about the concious truth we don’t yet understand

of course these were made by aliens.open your eyes people! even when they leave us a sign, you still don’t believe! Those 2 guys that professed to manmake the crop circles were hired by the govenment so people would not believe in ufos. I can`t believe you think a human could make these.Gee,do you think those 2 guys can travel all over the world and make thousands of them. also, those 2 guys weren`t around 100 yrs ago.this has been going on for centuries!

Great work. Wonderful pictures. I would love to see one but just not to close to my home. I sit on the fence post about how they are made. I too loved the X-Files. Thanks for a interesting piece.

… anyone who cast doubt on the construction of these circles as being anything less than from a non human form is living in alot of fear … there is way too much evidence available to form an opinion that these are created with an intent to carry a message … maybe too many people who shun the idea still haven’t gotten over the dissapointment of the Santa Claus letdown … this isn’t Santa Claus …

i think these were done by a rigged-up version of a roomba. all paths/patterns can be programmed and a fair sized pattern can be hashed out in a matter of few hours. that’s why the patterns have also evolved in complexity with software/hardware capabilities. think about it – from dumb circles, to connected dots to weaves to fractals to startrek and now to 3-D. cmon let’s give popart a big hand.
if there was a divine element to it, i would have expected to see a few patterns that are based on some inconceivable mathematics (unless we are just done with math and know everything). Julian and manderbrot sets? i’m sure aliens who can burn holes in earthly farms are not really up-to-date with the latest trends in popular psychedelic patterns on earth.

so beautiful they are! all the naysayers are ignorant. read up and you will soon see they are not man-made. not necessarily ‘alien’ made, but maybe the earth’s enrgies are telling us something…or the sun?

Tyler I’m afraid I have to say that I really do not know. I know this is a boring answer, but it is the truthful one. I was hoping someone could offer a convincing argument for something substantial.

The sheer intricacy of these suggest to me that they are far beyond what a couple (or even a couple of dozen!) humans could accomplish in a matter of one night! I further believe that there IS a message in the patterns of them. Perhaps they need to analized a a group, rather than individually: like differently shaped letter of the alphabet combining to make a message?
Just a thought.

Crop circles are beautiful. I have a degree in graphic design and have spent many hours in adobe Illustrator, Photoshop and other graphic programs. I know how many hours it takes to draw one of these designs on paper, let alone build one on a crop field. I have been looking at pictures of circles for years, and there is so much evidence with the node expulsions, precision lines, inter woven crops, some taking up to close to 1500 ft with 400 circles (Milk Hill 2001), there is no way people make all of them. Sure some are made by men, but you can tell by the photos that they have evident flaws of how the crop lays and how lame the design is. The intricate ones are the ones that are the ones with overwhelming evidence they are not made by a group of guys who are being funny or trying to make a buck. There are very complex hints going on in the pictures, hopefully we can decipher them to help us into a bet future.

Listen, You never see [an authentic crop circle] partially done and then abandoned. You never see one that has errors. You never see one in progress. You won’t find any tracks or evidence. As an engineer I can tell you the mathmatical application of laying down ovals, spirals and arches on this scale are highly unlikely by man. Take your compass and try to draw a perfect oval or spiral on a piece of paper and you’ll see what I am saying. And that is on a piece of paper, on your desk, at your leisure.
