UFO Encounter at Exeter

Exeter, New Hampshire, was the location of a landmark UFO case.

Exeter, New Hampshire, was the site of a classic unidentified flying object case in 1965. It all started on the night of September 3 when 18 year old Norman Muscarello was hitchhiking home. Suddenly, Muscarello saw a light that turned into an object probably 90 feet in diameter. It headed straight for him but veered away from him at the last second.

Meanwhile, police officer Eugene Bertrandss was on patrol when he received a call. A woman told him that while driving her car, a large, silent UFO followed her for 12 miles.

Officer Eugene Bertrand drove back to the police station where Muscarello was making a police report. Bertrand took Muscarello back to the place where he saw the UFO. At first, they did not see anything. Suddenly, a UFO rose from behind two big pine trees. The landscape was filled with a red light.

Bertrand was a four year veteran of the Air Force. He was very familiar with all types of planes but what he saw was like nothing he had ever seen before. Another Exeter police officer named David Hunt arrived as the UFO was moving away. Hunt was in time to see the object.

The Exeter incident led to a Congressional hearing on April 5, 1966, which led in turn to the creation of the Condon Committee. John G. Fuller would write about the case in his bestseller “Incident at Exeter”.  It was one of the best investigated and documented cases in UFO history.
