UFO on the Beach

A strange landmark.

Pensacola Beach, Florida is well known for its sugar white sandy beaches and clear blue Gulf waters. But did you know Pensacola Beach has its own spaceship?

A drive along Highway 98, also know as Via De Luna, will bring an unusual sight to unsuspecting tourist. Sparking white like the surrounding sand is an alien spaceship.

Proudly sitting on top of a small concrete building looking as if it is getting ready to take off for planets unknown is the Futuro-UFO-Flying Saucer House.

This small fiberglass house was one of many made in the early 1960,s by a Finnish company called Oy Polykem. This style is called the “Futuro II, and hosts a single bedroom, bathroom, U-shaped kitchen area, separate dining area, a built in curved 23-ft couch and a central fireplace that can double as a grill.

It has a unique entry way: a long upward ramp leads to a single pull-down door which is opened with a key much like a car door. The door is counter-weighted and requires little effort to pull down. Once inside and locked the house is virtually burglar proof.

While the house appears to be all one piece it was constructed in sections. While it is know that this one was flown in by helicopter completely assembled, others of the same type were delivered by truck and assembled on site around the nation. Four metal pads at the end of V- shaped legs are bolted into the concrete and utilities run through a column called “utility pod” immediately below the house and out of sight.

It is rumored the house was not built like a UFO as an attraction, but to lift up and float if the area was ever flooded by a hurricane. Its structural integrity was tested by Hurricane Ivan on September 16, 2004 and the next summer by Hurricane Dennis on July 10, 2005.

In recent years the Spaceship House has found itself on and off the market and had at one time been an overnight or weekly rental. It can most recently be found as part of a summer Intergalactic UFO Trolley Tour. Gulf Breeze, Florida and Pensacola Beach where part of a large number of UFO sightings in the 1980,s.

    Pam,
I wish I had a house like this!!! We’d definitely be the talk of the town then! It would be really nice if you could get some film on the inside of it. Great article, Pam!!!! Keep up the great work. Glad to see you got your computer working again! I finally got another message from Nick. Thank god for that!

The title caught my attention because I am intrigued by aliens etc. but I must say, even though the content was different, LOVING the house! I’d be proud to say that I own it if I ever did. Good article that has been very well indeed and I thoroughly loved reading it because special architecture takes my fancy!
