Yeti the Abominable Snowman: Myth vs. Reality

There has been a longstanding discussion as to whether the Yeti exists or not and it is still goes on as there has been no concrete evidence about its existence.

The Yeti believed to be an inhabitant of the Himalayan region ranging from Tibet to Nepal and higher reaches of Himalayas in India where it has been sighted a number of times by the locals. The scientist question its existence but the locals are pretty sure that it really exists.

Some of the earliest recorded instances of yeti sightings are as old as 1832 by James Prinsep author of Journal of the Asiatic Society of Bengal. There are various other sightings recorded since then which include Laurence Waddell in 1889 author of Among the Himalayas and N. A. Tombazi, a photographer and member of the Royal Geographical Society in 1925. Some of the most compelling evidence came forward in the 1950s when Eric Shipton took photographs of a number of large prints in the snow believed to be footprints of Yeti.

In recent times also footprints were found dating back as recent as December 2007, when an American television presenter Joshua Gates and his team reported found a series of footprints in the Everest region of Nepalresembling descriptions of Yeti. Casts were made of the prints for further research. The footprints were examined by Jeffrey Meldrum of Idaho State University, who believed them to be too morphologically accurate to be fake or man made.

It would require more and more compelling evidence for us to firmly believe that this creature exists but as far as the people who live in the higher reaches of the Himalayas, there is no doubt in their minds that it does as it has been a part of their folklore for a long time.
