A Little Assistance for Gavin Newsom
Writing and a flash movie done as practice – my subject, supporting Gavin Newsom.
What kind of writer would I be if I didn’t continue to practice. Even if my writing isn’t that good now, it will hopefully become better with practice. The same goes for flash movies and other creative ventures. So, hopefully, this is something folks will like and I would love for it to be useful to someone.
The ad in flash and the video were done for “fun” and the speech was actually an entry for a creative writing contest. It needed to be inspirational so I tried to write something I think Barrack Obama would say. I’ve never heard if people agree or not.

This writing piece is also at the bottom of the linked page, but I thought I would post it here in it’s entirety as well:
Title: Hope for a new America
I’d like you to sit back, clear your mind, and embark on a mental journey with me. Try to forget all the stresses of work, personal relationships, and mounting bills, so together, we can imagine a simple scene – an inspiring image of America.
Imagine you are sitting in a comfortable chair outside on a beautiful, sunny day with a cool drink in hand. From your vantage point, you are looking across one of our nation’s majestic mountain ranges, like the Colorado Rockies. The mountains span as far left and as far right as the eye can see. It is just about dusk and you are looking west towards the horizon as the sun begins to slowly sneak behind the mountains. The sky is filled with amazing orange hue as the calm of night approaches.
As you gaze across this breathtaking landscape, you begin to reflect on what happened that day – the places you went, the people you spoke with, the decisions you made, and how all that made you feel. Upon recollection, you can’t help but think it was a long, tiring day with many challenges. Sure you had some memorable moments with family and friends and were able to spend some time laughing and having fun, but you just can’t shake the feeling that this day was harder than most.
This is when you begin to ask yourself questions. When I spent money on those clothes today, was that money I could really afford to spend? When I talked to my neighbor about their hedges coming over my property line, how did I handle that conversation? Was I just being stubborn or was I diplomatic? When my insurance company pressured me to buy a policy for my home, did I choose the right one? Did I do enough research to make a smart choice? These thoughts dance around in your head as you replay the day’s events and try figure out if you would do anything differently.
At that moment, your attention is caught by a glimmering distant light above. It’s the first bright star making its presence felt on the young night sky. As you scan the sky with your eyes, you start to notice other stars that get brighter and stronger with each passing minute. With this observation, your thoughts begin to change.
You begin to think of the men and women from our space program who have dedicated themselves to reaching those stars and landing on the moon. And with a new found global interest, how the United States, alongside other nations of the world, will visit the moon again. You think of the brave soldiers and members of our armed forces from all across the nation and all walks of life who have fought to preserve our freedom. Without them, a quiet night dreaming of the stars would not be possible. Maybe they too will traverse this beautiful evening sky to be home safe once again with their friends and families. You think of how clear the sky is now and how that could change from the increasing pollution in the atmosphere. But then you rest assured when you think of the worlds best and brightest, like the stars above, coming together to shift our dependency on oil and preserve our planet. You think of all the hard working Americans who have lost their jobs and fell on hard times in this struggling economy. Hopefully, the transition of this day into the night will make the American work force shine once again.
It is clear to you now that the passing of this day, this seemingly endless, challenging day, is all a part of God’s grand and complex design. Together, we are to focus on our bright future and remember how working together, like the brilliant stars in the night sky, will propel us into better times. The road may not be easy and the change will not be instant, but with a new dawn on the horizon, we have a strength and determination that is unparalleled in our history. America is ready to put our differences aside, join hands, and take advantage of a new day illuminated by a new hope, a new United States of America.
