Actor Joe McGann Talks to David A Ellis

by DAVID A ELLIS in People, February 11, 2009

Interview with TV, film, and theatre actor Joe McGann.

David A Ellis talked to the actor Joe McGann when he appeared at the Liverpool Empire in Fiddler on the Roof. Joe starred in the long running TV series The Upper Hand.

Did you want to be an actor from being a child – was it always your ambition?

I wouldn’t say it was always my ambition. When I was twelve I was taken to the Liverpool Playhouse to see Ghost Train by Arnold Ridley. I was completely transfixed; it was the first time I’d ever been to the theatre. I pointed my finger and said “I want to do that.” A week later I joined a youth theatre.

Did you do anything before acting?

I was in the music business writing songs.

What was your first professional role?

It was probably Gaskin, but I am not sure, it was a long time ago.

Where was the series The Upper Hand recorded and how did you get the role in that?

It was recorded in Nottingham. My agent put me up for it; I auditioned and got the job.

Do you still see any of the cast?

I do from time to time. It was a great show, we all got on, and we have all remained good friends.

Were you sorry when the series ended?

I suppose a little, but at the same time that is the way this business is. It ran for six years.

I understand you were a TV reporter in the South of England?

Yes, I was a TV reporter on South Today for a couple of years. I got to do some great fun things including flying in helicopters, abseiling down castles and interviewing some great people.

After that period did you decide to go back to acting?

It wasn’t that clear-cut a decision. Things weren’t turning up for a while, or not things that I could afford to do. I did little bits and pieces. I did a lot of voice work, I was always available.

Do you have a preference or do you enjoy theatre, film and TV equally?

I enjoy theatre more, that’s why I joined up. It seems more satisfying.

How did you get the role of Topol in Fiddler on the Roof?

I got a phone call asking me would I do it. I wasn’t sure about it at first because I wasn’t a huge fan of the film. I read the script and realised there was a lot more to it than I had imagined.

Do you enjoy touring Joe?

I love touring. I enjoy working – I’m like a black cab driver, if I’m not working I’m not earning. I like getting out and about, going to different places. It makes it feel like a proper job.

Have you anymore TV lined up?

No, I haven’t seen anything even halfway decent in terms of TV scripts. I gave my own TV away. I think that most of what is on is banal rubbish. The Americans can make great dramas and comedies. We have exceptions such as Life on Mars and one or two others.

Do you write and if so what do you write?

I write articles and scripts. I keep a journal and I have a couple of ideas for potential novels.

Would you consider another musical?

I’ll consider anything. I’ve been blessed in my career – I can work across the board. I have done serious drama, classical drama and comedy, so I will consider anything that comes along.

Have you any hobbies?

Yes, I’m a keen walker and climber. I’ve learned a lot about trees in the past few years. I also enjoy cooking and reading.

Thanks very much Joe.
