Amazing Facts About Red Hair You May Not Know

Red haired people have a special form of beauty that puts them in a class all their own. Here are some interesting facts about red hair.

Of all the hair colors, redheads may get the most second glances. Not because they’re the most uncommon hair color (natural blondes have that distinction), but because their hair color is so visually stunning. A redhead will always stand out in a crowd of people. Unfortunately, redheads often have to endure a barrage of comments about their fiery tempers and their freckles which if tolerated long enough could result in an outburst that confirms that age old stereotype about red hair and temper.

Natural redheads are an interesting breed when you look back through the ages at some of the most interesting ones. Some famous redheads from history include Lucille Ball, Galileo, Vincent van Gogh, Ginger Rogers, Red Skelton, and Molly Ringwald to name a few. In the modern age, who can forget the talented Nicole Kidman or the stunning voice of Bette Midler? Here are some facts about red hair you may not know:

Red hair facts: They’ve been discriminated against historically.

Redheads have not always been as valued as they are today. In Greek mythology, it was thought that red haired people turned into vampires when their life ended and the ancient Egyptians reportedly paid tribute to their god by burying men with red hair while they were still alive. Even in modern times, discrimination still exists in some parts of the world. If you pass a red haired person on the street in Corsica, you’re supposed to spit. Redheads have also been labeled with attributes that were less than flattering. Throughout history they have been called violent, emotional, hot tempered, crazy, mystical, and unclean. On the positive side, it’s considered an honor to have a red haired child in Denmark.

Red hair facts: They’ve been called a range of nicknames

Red haired people have had to endure a range of unflattering nicknames and phrases including such oldies as carrot-top, red on head, red, agent orange, big red, fireball, and fire truck. They’ve also been greeted with such salutations as “Is your hair on fire?” and “Here comes a fire truck!” Is there any wonder that red haired people tend to develop a good sense of humor?

Red hair facts: They have unique hair characteristics

Having red hair is rather unique in and of itself, although red hair has a wide range of colors from strawberry blonde to rich, auburn red. Red haired people have fewer hairs on their head than do blondes or brunettes, although each individual hair tends to be thicker. Surprisingly, their hair doesn’t turn gray. It turns an intermediate neutral shade and then completely white with age.

Red hair facts: Health characteristics

Studies have shown that people with red hair are more sensitive to pain and may require higher doses of pain medication than do their dark and blonde haired counterparts, In addition, they often need higher levels of anesthesia to get the same level of sedation. They also tend to be more prone to allergies than those with other hair colors.

It seems that redheads really are a unique and special breed. Maybe that’s why more and more women are heading to the drugstore to try and replicate their special form of beauty.

I’m a read head and I think that it is so awesome. Sadly, you have to deal with never getting a tan, all the freckles, and the nicknames!! Also, you always have a person talking about how pretty your hair is, which, although it’s not like it’s not flattering, but, it gets annoying. By the way, my hair is a little darker than strawberry blonde with lots of curls.

That “fact” about lower pain tolerance is incorrect. A later study proved to be the opposite. The red head brain works a bit different than others, higher pain tolerances and it takes almost 3x the anesthesia! Pain meds get expensive!

Naturally black-haired… but I dye my hair red, because I just like the colour. Right now it’s a deep shade of auburn, faded almost to chestnut brown. I’ll dye it a brighter shade soon, anyway. People think I’m nuts, but what gives? Red hair rocks! I envy people who are naturally red-haired.

I have bright red hair, its really red. I love my hair, but I always feel indifferent. It seems people only see me for my hair color, and they don’t actually see ME. Plus, I don’t know about all the other redheads, but my hair is EXTREMELY thick. AND I cannot have high doses of pain medication, I am allergic to all high medications, it really messes with my system. So I guess I go against the norm, then again I am also left handed and green eyed lol. Green eyes are the rarest of the eye colors. Grey coming in second. I love red hair, and here is my favorite saying….CARROT TOPS are GREEN genius!

I used to hate havin red hair, in skool people would make u feel like there was something wrong with it so I got in to loads of fights and that made me tuff until none would dare try insult me, but I left that way of dealing with people in my teens and grew to appreciate my red hair. Never had problems gettin women I can make em laff and that goes a long way, but I do consider myself good looking and I have a beautiful girlfriend who loves red hair as to many Iv met. The bottom line is confidence. And that thing about pain is rubbish I can take as good as any if not more.

I am a ginger… dark red hair (like red red, not the orangey red / coppery color) freckles, green eyes with blue rims, left-handed, and have light skin (which doesn\’t bother me). My parents both have dark brown hair. I am the only person in my family (for generations) with red hair and colored eyes. I have a twist to me though, I have dark brown eyebrows, weird I know. I love being who I am, and I wouldn\’t change it for the world.

I actually want to find a redheaded guy so my kids have a better chance of being redheaded, I got a lot of milkman jokes as a kid and I have no Irish or Scottish in me so I donno how I got it but I’m glad I did! hia im a red head from scotland :D i used to get annoyed in primary school but now im in high school its better . i just stick beside the people i know an if anyone annoys me ill swear at them ( hardly nobody tells on you in high school unless they are a grassbag ) i think being a red head is an advantage because its different and i like being different. im the only red head in most of my classes an i dont care at all.
advise : if someone annoys you just sit and stare at them the whole day ( you have to look really evil , look like your about to kill them but dont really kill them lol ) if they keep annoyin you get all your friends to stare at them aswell .

My name is Red. My hair was quite red when i was little and now it is more auburn – ish, but its still red. I like the color.
As for red head girls, it looks good on them. I think red hair on a girl is NICE! So if you cant get a boyfriend, i doubt its cuz of the hair. Its true, its about confidence.

Pain tolerance thing must not be true, because i am pretty tough and can stand quite a bit of pain.

Sunburns blow, so thanks to whoever made sunblock. I get a bit of a tan, but not dark like a leb. lol.I have to protect myself.

That video http://www.miauk.com is pretty nuts. Our day will come lol

I am from Nova Scotia in Canada and happy to be Red. I’ve always been told I have a bit of a temper though, but its hard to piss me off. I think. lol

  75. Paul

    On April 30, 2010 at 3:28 pm

Also, from Red, Im good at sports, no problem with the ladies, talkative, had fights in grade school (no big deal), freckles on my arms and shoulders (i use to have them on my face but i guess they blended in).

If anyone bugs you about the red hair you can either find out what bugs them and beat them at their own game, punch them, or just ignore them. Since i wasnt all that witty I would opt to fight them lol, but not always the best choice. If i could i would rather out wit them and get them angry instead, but its not that easy.

Keep having fun, its what its all about.

    Peace

The last comment that red heads feel more pain other people is a not true, this is an urban myth. Gingers can actually feel less pain than others with a different hair colour. Yes gingers may require higher doses of pain medication than others but this not because they feel more pain.

I’m ginger, blue eyes, right-handed and shamefully I have braces. I don’t mind any more though after reading all of the comments. I am proud of being a ginger no matter what everyone calls me or says about they can never be as unique as we are :)

I”m a red head and have grown to love it. Got made fun of all the time as a kid. Hate that I can’t tan. I get complimnets all the time now. I love my hair and son does my husband. Red heads do get more attention from the opposite sex and we are known to be sexually advanced!! I do think I have a low pain tolerance. My mom is red hed and her hair is turning white. But it actually looks strwberry blonde now. Red heads are awesome!!!

I wonder if there is any connection with redheads and being left-handed? Almost every redhead I have ever met was left-handed. I have very long naturally red hair to my waist, brown eyes and I am left Handed! Redheads are very common in my family: me, a sister, my mom, 5 cousins and 2 nephews. All redheads, all with brown eyes, and most of us left handed!

When I was little I so wanted to be blond… Wow now I would not change my color for anything. To me god picked out a special few to carry the color of warmth, love, passion, and emotion. Yes we may be a bit hot tempered at times but really you only notice us more cause we are fewer and stand out. And really every idiot that decides to mock or belittle us deserves a bit of a butt kicking. Dah you bring it out. Let me treat you in the same fashion and see what happens. Everyone can be hot tempered. I would rather be depicted as we are than stupid or boring.

As a red-haired female, I discovered that certainly not all men go for red hair. I got over that a while ago, no worries there. But of the many that do (and some do big-time), these guys were amongst the best types possible. These are the men who are interested in an unique-looking woman, they are pleased to stand beside her with her eye-catching colouring – enjoying her own particular brand of beauty and personality. They are way above the Pack Mentality. Get a man like that and you are set for life. I did, thank God. I firmly believe that if I’d gone for the peroxide option (I was tempted around age 18) I might well have attracted a few more guys down the pub, but (shudder) I might not have made it onto my actual husband’s radar… I would have lost all that is so natural and unique about me, just to become another dyed-in-the-hair stereotype.

So I say: play to the sensual, artistic, mythical aspects of your natural red hair (especially the sensual, it’s great fun, still is) and quality men will notice you and appreciate you! Who cares about the rest? Be thankful. Life as a natural redhead is great when you are highly selective and stop trying to please the masses. Let those that want to conform do their stereotypical stuff with each other, whilst you concentrate on being a unique person. Red hair has mystique all of its own. Not everyone can see this – if they could, it wouldn’t be much of a mystique, would it? Wait for those that can – they are worth it. Personally I didn’t have to wait that long… but remember to look in the right places too! Get away from Pack Mentality hangouts if you have to.

After 25 years, my husband still finds me beautiful, and tells me so regularly. It’s not all about the hair – he’s not superficial enough to have picked me out just for that, but somehow, I think it helped the “package”! Personality is actually the huge thing of course – more than any physical characteristic. Perhaps we should all work on that, above all? Best wishes to all of you, all hair colours, natural and assisted!

I’m a redheaded 14-year-old. I haven’t ever been called a ginger since this year by some 6th grader whom I told was a daywalker. Heh. :)

I guess guys notice me. My hair is dark red, long, and straight. It’s down to my butt. Mostly guys just mutter stuff like “Oh here comes ginger” or “FIRE!” I tell them to shut up and move on my way. Guess I’m just waiting for the guy who tells his own friends to shut up for me. :)

Uh yeah to Michelle who says people who dye their hair red are dumb…how does dumping red dye make someone dumb? I’m a natural blonde and I dye my hair red. I like my hair red. It doesn’t make me ‘dumb’ to dye my hair. Are you just jealous that bottle redheads didn’t have to endure the teasing you may have? Well guess what? I was fat and ugly as a kid…. does that make it even? You’re ignorant.

It’s just another color, just because its different other people feel the need to act upon the uncommon. Natural blonde hair is not the most unusual hair color. LESS than 2% of people in the world have red hair, while 2-3% of people have naturally blonde hair, that’s not even counting “dirty blonde” or “dishwasher blonde”.

I have red hair but no freckles AT ALL. The names (daywalker) get old and because of my “fiery temper” ive been known to argue alot with guys who make fun of me. My eyes are hazel and my hair was ringlets when i was younger. Now its just long and curly. Another thing: i tan. Im on a swim team and in the summer im tan or sunburnt. I got so many compliments when i was little that i would freak and run behind my mom when some random lady came over and tried to touch my hair. Now i just act poliet and walk away. This article helped me, im 14 and ive always dreamed of being a beautiful blonde like everyother girl i know. No one in my family has red hair, either. Its half hard to try and get a boyfriend so i wish that i was easier. I always feel like an exotic bird in a flock of seagulls whenever im at school.
One more thing :) GO REDHEADS. DONT LET ANYONE PUT YOU DOWN FOR BEING YOU!

I’m red-haired (big, thick, curly!) and from England. I’m also left-handed, blue eyed, pale skinned, freckled, 6ft tall. I have a twin sister who’s 5ft 8 and has dark brown straight hair! I don’t know what it is, or whether its related but people have said I have a good sense of humour and I think its where I’ve got used to people taking the mick, so so I don’t take myself too seriously People tell me I’m laid back and I’m generally quite a chilled out person, but when someone annoys me they know about it and I can argue my case pretty damn convincingly!
Teasing was never too bad at primary school because I went to a tiny village school, but got worse at secondary school. Boys are especially and surprisingly bitchy about it! The worst was when I had the ‘oi ginger’ FROM A TEACHER! I’ve also heard ‘her hair’s on fire’ so many times, but I’ve gotten used to it. I quickly learnt that ignoring the comments was the best option and now they really don’t bother me, the number of lovely compliments (especially from older women!) have balanced it out, though that in itself can get annoying sometimes. I even describe myself as ‘ginger’, people have to be more inventive now!
I went through a stage of trying to straighten my hair and tying it up to make it look less obvious, but I then I thought ‘no, I’ve had enough’. I’m now fiercely proud of my red hair and I love the amount of attention I get from it. I can be walking down a road and virtually every person (particularly men) driving past will stare. I don’t know if they look at me thinking damn she’s one ugly person or whether they like it, but I don’t care. I’ve found that some of my friends are very jealous and want my hair colour, but at the same time (though this may be more to do with my lack of confidence – I was a tomboy till about 11 and so boys tend to see me as friends rather than girlfriend material) I’ve always had trouble getting a boyfriend.
Anyway, I’m rambling I want to say that red-hair can be beautiful, and I’ve found that the men who like it are incredibly nice, warm-hearted people and that’s the sort of guy you want to be worrying about, not the low-life idiots who take the mick! Please love you hair, it makes us so unique, believe me we’re never forgotten! Be proud!! :-D

Being a child with red hair is hell. People often look at your outward appearance before anything. FIRECROTCH, BIG RED, GINGER, CHUCKY, RAGGEDY ANN, and PIPPY LONG SLOCKING, are just a few of the common names you hear from other children. But as the years have passed by, and people veiw me as an adult and not a child, I hear nothing but complements on my hair. Men turn for a second look, women tell me how much they wished they had my hair. Strangers make conversation based solely on my look.. I know realize that all the torment given to me as child was jealousy.. :) sometimes it’s good to be me.

People usually taunt me saying things like “Carrot Top,” “Fire Ball,” “Go back to ireland,” “Pippy long stocking,” & more. Adults always tell me how lucky I am to have my Dark thick Red hair but somtimes I think to differ because of my taunters. I have a younger sister who also has red hair & i’m affriad that when she goes into Kindergarden soon , that people will make fun of her too. Haha Im a natural red head. I have been blessed with lovely aurban colour red and minimal freckles and light cream skin. Everywhere i go i get complements on my hair and asked if its natural and when i say yes, it becomes a oww and arrrh effect to all the people in ear shot range. I did get teased at school so much over it but I loved my hair. I think all natural red head should love their hair because so many people would love to have it. I also personally think alot of younger kids see you as a threat as well, because of the colour. I have had a few people over the years say that to me after they matured up. So enjoy and love the colour. Its rare and its a massive trend at the moment, be happy to be born with it and not dyed.

Hello fellow Tician reds, strawberry blondes, redhaired ladies and gents!

I sure wish there was a button on this site to at least vote down if not report crude and offensive remarks such as the little boys above.

In my 60 years I have been called so many names, be it red fox, copperhead, big red, firebrand, orange, ginger, rusty, clairol lady, barbarossa, carrot top, whatever. I learned to be quite sharp tongued about it by necessity, otherwise these jokers will walk all over you.

So I devised answers to the stupid phrases I would come to expect from about age 10 on to shield myself from the pain people attempted to inflict on me.

    Q: “Where’s the fire?” A: “In your mother’s kitchen”
Q: “What’s up, copperhead?” A: “Wanna find out how one bite can kill you?”
Q: “Your roof must be leaking, because your hair is rusting” A: “It’s copper, so it’s called patina, moron”
Q “Another fox and no gun” A: Another idiot and no loony bin”
Q: Are you red everywhere else?” A: “No, I’m white, seriously!”
Q: “How can you have red hair, you’re not Irish!” “Shhh, I’m a covert agent”
Q: I would never marry a redhead, because then my kids would be redheads” A: “I would never marry a fool because then my kids would be fools”
Or a total stranger on the bus – at least 40 years my senior – tried to pick me up by saying I should get together with him as he “had a thing for redheads.” To which I responded that I didn’t have a thing for old geezers.
And those who called me carrot top I usually correct stating that the tops of carrots are green.

But seriously, it was no fun growing up “red”. Angel-faced blonde girls tried to beat me up for being “red”, and once my braids were literally set on fire behind my back ny a set of boys. I often swore that I would dye my hair black once I was old enough (my mother would not allow it when I was young).

Now, I don’t mind it so much. In fact, my daughter has a mahogany streak of hair and my grandbaby has reddish golden locks. Famous painters mostly chose their subjects to be redhaired, as it is a better, warmer contrast than say dirty blonde, so we often see ourselves reflected in beautiful and valuable works of art. To my kids and grandkids I have always stressed the positive and would never tolerate anyone calling any of us names That is probably why they turned out so well balanced and tolerant toward others.

Let’s celebrate Redhead Day International! http://www.roodharigen.nl/

My mom walked in on me and my girlfriend having sex on the living room couch. This was the first time she ever met my mom, and now she’s too mortified to ever come back. How can I make this situation comfortable for everyone?

  140. Matthew Wymer

    On November 8, 2011 at 6:19 am

First, you should apologize to your mother, assure her that you were having safe sex, and tell her how embarrassed your girlfriend is. After you’ve done that, you should talk to your girlfriend and let her know that everything is fine. Then offer to introduce her to your mother for real. If I were her, I’d be open and say something like, “Hi, Mrs. XYZ, I’m really sorry about how we met, but I’m hoping we can move past this,” with a big, friendly smile.

It’s rare when a guy can make me come, but my vibrator has always done the job. Is it offensive to bring it out when I’m with a guy, assuming that he won’t be able get me off?

  143. Matthew Wymer

    On November 8, 2011 at 6:29 am

Hell no! Let him know that you enjoy it, and want to enjoy it together with him. Show him how to use it on you so he can play a more proactive role. In my experience, guys\’ finding out you were faking an orgasm is far more devastating to their egos than a girl who knows what she wants and how she likes it.

  144. Max Cussans

    On November 8, 2011 at 6:31 am

James a lot of guys get turned on when a woman takes control in the bedroom. By telling a guy exactly what he has to do to get you off, even if that includes using your vibrator, you can make it more exciting for him. If you\’re in a relationship, then you can bring it up like, \”Hey, why don\’t we try something a little different this time?\” When he sees how much you enjoy it, it\’ll be a lot easier for him to handle.

People fuck, and unless your mom is of the no-sex-before-marriage ilk, she’s got to know that your sex life will not halt just because you’re under her roof. Have an awkward laugh about it with mom, then appeal to this girl’s sense of pride. Tell her that your parents will love her and that her many wonderful attributes will easily overshadow the incident.

My mom has 5 more other kids and i am the only one that came out with red hair at first i didnt like it cuz of all the teasing and what not but my mom always told me that i was unique and they were just jealous so it didnt bother me anymore i actually laughed at there jokes and just made them look like retards lol they wouuld just walk off and never did it again I love my red hair i have not had any trouble getting girl friends, I have a fiance\’ right now who is dark haired but have red tints in her hair and she also has family with red hair so chances of us making a kid with red hair is pretty good i think :) RED HEADS RULZ!!!! :)

I have strawberry brown hair, is that considered red? Both my sisters have red hair (big surprise we’re scottish) and in my family its always been refered to as brown, although other people always ask if i have red hair. Wierd about the pain, i actually have a pain disorder, lol!

I am a natural red head \”strawberry blonde\” and hated my hair growing up begging my mother at age 14teen to change the color.. but when i saw my baby girl being borning and that red hair I feel in love with it. some of the facts on here are not true. and most the ones I have read on other sites makes me laugh. But I am proud to be a red head and my 5 year old daughter getts so many people that say they want her hair color, which makes her feel so good. My whole family is basicly red heads but I also have a son that is dirty blonde. be proud to be a red head we different!

I’m left-handed with brown eyes and naturally red hair and freckles. I dont mind my freckles people say that they are cute all the time.. People either compliment my hair or freckles. And yes it does get annoying. I’ve been saying thank you since I can remember. As far as getting a boyfriend that was not an issue.. too much attention was given. We are one of a kind!! RED HEADS ROCK! :-)

im a natural redhead. i have blueish greenish greyish eyes and am right handed.i get called ginger, but that doesnt really annoy me. though i hate being called a leprechaun.another annoying thing is when people point out the fact that i have red hair and freckles, its like they dont realize i already know that XD oh well.im 13 and the only person in my school with curly red hair, there are others with straight red hair but not curly.and i hate when people (which they often do) tell me to straighten my hair.but other than that i dont really mind having red hair.and im considered to be quite funny and am very sarcastic.and actually i can tolerate pain quite well.

I’m a male in Canada and was born with auburn hair. It was pretty annoying when I was younger but not because people bugged me but more because I didn’t look like anyone else. Thankfully I’ve always been athletic so I was able to fit in well with the guys, not many problems with the ladies either. One thing I’ve noticed is a sensitivity to cold, it really bites into me! Other than that I’ve always been reasonably strong for my size but I don’t know if that has anything to do with the mutated gene or not. My wife’s hair is red as well (I prefer redheads) but our son has mainly brown hair with some red highlights.

    Cheers my fellow redheads:)

I too am a redhead :) one thing I’ve embraced as a redhead is that being one of a kind in a sea of 50-100 people (office staff) who are not redheaded is that it can be intimidating but that half the time they are actually envious. Many times they tell me how they wished they had my hair and several jokingly asked if they could cut my tresses and make themselves a wig. For sure being different hair colour wise makes it easier to take liberty in being odd in general. When people say “girl you are crazy” I smile and say “aren’t all redheads” :) (technically not true)

Yoo I’m 20, ginger with bright blue eyes! Boom, but here’s the thing, people don’t call me ginger anymore, here’s my problem! As a kid I had bright ginger orange hair, got called all sorts of names but I dealt with it, always loved my hair! But at around 14 my hair turned a kinda gold ginger, was very shiney, and then at 18 it was still the same but seemed to be getting darker…and now I’m 20 my hair is like a dark browny ginger with a slight golden hint, does anyone know why this has happened? Lol I got scottish english and irish ansestory, most my family has some kinda ginger hair, so yeah I may not look like one but in a ginger at heart!

I live in Chile ( not red haired people here) I have brown hair, but since i was a little child i told my mom that i will marry a red hair boy someday, I didn’t know why i used to say that, and i have continued thinking that through all my life, but I had naver had a red hair boyfriend and I had never met one. A year ago i met a guy by chat and we just started chatting no web cam, and i inmediately fell in love with him, two months after we met, we saw by cam in skype, i was sure i was in love with him and him with me, when I saw him that first time I understood everything. He is red haired. We are crazy and love and i can’t wait to have a red hair baby.

OK….I’m a Red Head (dark – Auburn color) and green eyes. Additionally, 60 years old. Like many of you, I didn’t like being a redhead when i was younger – some teasing – and the such…but fortunately we all grow up and that does go away.

Now at 60 all the same people LOVE my red hair and wish they had red hair to…WHY YOU ASK, becasue most of them now have GREY hair or no hair at all – something that doesn’t happen to us red heads…..we keep our hair and it holds it color.

We are a very special few….be proud of your hair and I’ll GUARANTEE when all your friends hair is grey or gone, your friends too will be very envious…….Also, I have had a LOT of people (especially girls) tell me now that they wished their hair was red all along………We’re special…..accept it…..
