Are We Moving Too Fast?

A brief look on the idea of the 21st century’s obsession with the new in relation to Michael Jackson.

Do we move on from things too fast? I think the recent death of Michael Jackson can shed an interesting light on the question. There’s an odd paradox that surrounds the singer’s death; his burial and autopsy took so long and yet the world has seemed to have moved on. You may not agree with the latter statement, but let me explain.

Michael Jackson died on June 25th this year, his memorial service was on 7th of July, but he wasn’t buried until the third of September, ten weeks after his death. And yet, already seems to be a panicked search for the next Michael Jackson.

Music Channels were already searching for the next king or queen of pop mere days after Jackson’s death, but there are other forms of this programme popping up. An Australian programme talent show, based on Michael Jackson and the Jackson Five, was recently accused of racism when they allowed a comedy troupe appear. Recently the BBC announced its own talent show “Move Like Michael Jackson” aimed at finding the next Michael Jackson.

Whilst I agree that Michael Jackson was a huge talent and a massive lost to the music industry, I think we all need to calm down and not worry about finding the next big thing. Michael Jackson is a legend not because someone died before him and he took their place, he is a legend because he worked hard and was genuinely talented. I’m not saying we should wallow in his loss and not look at new talent, nor am I saying that we should ban all talent programmes. I simply think we should remember the talent he was and sit back and let a new talent grow, instead of forcing it too soon.
