Arturo Gatti’s Death Ruled a Suicide
This article covers the Gatti’s death and release of the autopsy report. The initial cause of death was reversed from murder to suicide.
The police investigating the death of Arturo Gatti ruled on July 30th that the death was a suicide. According to the Associated Press (AP) Paulo Alberes, lead investigator in the case, said Gatti killed himself on July 11th 2009, at a seaside resort in Northeastern Brazil.
Initially, his 23 year old wife, Amanda Rodriques was arrested for his murder. The police alleged she strangled him with her purse strap, while he was sleeping. The coroner’s report released a week later indicated that Gatti was found suspended and hanged so he may have committed suicide. The report, however, did not rule out murder, but said he could have died in an unexplained accident, or committed suicide.
Despite the coroner’s report being inconclusive, the wife’s attorney Celio Avelino said “the police investigation concluded that Arturo killed himself. I’ve said before it would have been impossible for her to suspend and hang a man of his size”
A judge in ordering the release of Gatti’s wife cited the police investigation and wrote that “the victim took his own life; committing suicide by hanging” Judge Lidete Verissimo de Lima reportedly ordered that Rodriques should be released immediately. The judge wrote that “the detention of the suspect was no longer needed, as the investigation excludes the possibility of murder”
Gatti’s family and friends questions the ruling that Gatti killed himself. A fellow boxer Howard Grant said “It doesn’t make any sense”
