Let the circus begin…
At least some of the speculation is now over, and we can move on to the next stage of the dramatic process. Reports are that Ben Roethlisberger will surrender himself to Milledgeville, Georgia authorities formally on Monday and be charged with Sexual Assault stemming from an incident in a local club involving a 20 year old college girl.
And so it goes. In another bid for attention by some small town district attorney desperate for their 15 minutes of fame, millions of taxpayers’ dollars will be wasted prosecuting a case that will never see a conviction. It will be very public, occupy the spotlight for awhile, cost Ben Roethlisberger a few bucks in endorsements, (and, in all likelihood, a bit more in settlement money after all is said and done), and we’ll all be provided entertainment and water cooler conversation for months.
Meanwhile, the tragedy that is crimes of this nature will be diminished just a bit more. Public farces like this bleed the importance of assaults that almost routinely happen in our world; they cause the general public to be steeled to them as we are to virtually everything else. While some college bimbo looking for a quick financial windfall sits back and milks the system, real victims are ignored and made a mockery of.
But we eat it up, and so it will continue. We have only our sensationalized society to blame. See ya in court.
