Bristol Palin and Levi Johnson seem to be reveling in all their notoriety. They both seem obsessed with publicity since Sarah Palin introduced them to the world in 2008. Bristol standing behind her mother holding her Down Syndrome baby brother. Then the announcement that she was pregnant with Johnson’s baby. Just the average family with teens and the mistakes they make. Then the break up of the young couple, and Johnson suddenly wasn’t the down home boy anymore. He was starring in Porn films and associating with characters not welcome in polite society.

Bristol was staying at home helping care for her baby brother while mom campaigned. She was the good little girl who had made the mistake of being too intimate with her boy friend. The baby came and Bristol donned her high school graduation cap and gown and appeared on the cover of People Magazine with the baby in her arms. Courting the limelight begins. She appeared in the TV show “the Secret Life of the American Teenager” and made the round of talk shows and events garnering attention anywhere she could. This young couple could serve as models for teens who make a mistake and continue to prepare themselves to be accomplished adults. But so far they have not done so. There is no mention of college attendance or responsible life decisions.

    Bristol accused Levi of being a philanderer obsessed with the limelight, even as she posed for People Magazine.  Maybe a case of the pot calling the kettle black where publicity seeking is concerned. She now claims to have broken up with Levi for good. The average teen parent  is assured of living in poverty with one dead end job after another. Today those without a college degree cannot hope to earn even average wages.

   Only 40% of teen moms go on to graduate high school, and just 1.5% have a college degree. Bristol did graduate high school but Levi did not and shows no sign of doing so. He remains a high school drop out. They will not remain of interest to the media forever. Someone new always comes along.  Levi and Bristol would do themselves and the child a big favor by getting an education and leaving the temporary fascination of the media behind.

    It makes you wonder if Sarah Palin with all her hunting skills and political attributes has any more influence over her own children than the rest of us have over ours.
