Celebrities in Commercials: Effectiveness, Examples and Readers’ Poll

An article with a poll, featuring celebrities in advertising campaign.

Hiring a celebrity to do an ad for you is tough. You need to pay a lot of money and you might even need to persuade them because with some celebrities, the brand needs them more than they need the publicity and the paycheck.

Sometimes the reputation of the celebrity fits the brand. When BMW signed with Clive Owen, I should argue that they acted smartly. Because they did not just put him in a car. They made a mini-series that looked very much like short films where Clive was a contract driver and several exciting events followed him and his passenger. The driver is very much like Clive’s action film characters: precise, charismatic, smart and a little cheeky. Moreover Clive Owen is liked by both men and women. So I’d say Clive was worth it. But Brad Pitt and Richard Gere also appeared in ads for other brands. And apart from recognizing them, I don’t remember anything else.

Jon Bon Jovi became the face of the Kenneth Cole perfume. It looks like they prepared the ads after they signed Jon on because one of the slogans is: “Did you rock someone’s world?”

Jonathan Rhys-Meyers is a popular young actor who prove himself in diverse roles. He became the face of Hugo Boss. The slogan was just a modern copy writer’s and the advertising student’s dream: “It’s just a fragrance. The rest is up to you.” They took a young, popular but not-in-your-face-celebrity type of an actor, cut out the exaggeration and made its point. It is, in my point of view, much more effective than all the other fragrance commercials that promise more action in your sexual life because you put on their scent.

L’oreal almost always works with celebrities. In fact I can’t count on how many celebrities they worked with over the years. Some include: Heather Locklear, Andie MacDowell and Jane Fonda.

Avon used Reese Witherspoon.

Chanel worked with Nicole Kidman.

And sometimes a brand throws in all the big names because well…it just can. Remember the Pepsi commercial that had Shakira, Beyoncé and David Beckham all at once?

The examples are endless. It is an ever-discussed topic in the world of advertising. Some companies seem strategic and some just seem to love casting celebrities for the sake of it. And here is my poll:

- Is it worth it? Do the brands gain increased brand awareness and generate more sales and revenues?

-Even if an effect is achieved, does it last?

- Do you care which celebrity endorses which brand? If you hate the celebrity, would you stop buying the product? Or would you buy a product you didn’t really know about because a celebrity you liked endorsed it?

- From an advertiser’s point of view, would you try this method if you could afford it?

- Do you believe in the significance of relevance? Like Clive Owen in BMW or Jonathan Rhys Meyers for Hugo?

I suppose celebrities attract the attention more, which could lead to better sales. I think this type of marketing must work because many firms have been doing this for years. A really good article.

Very interesting article and a good read It still makes me laugh how celebrities will endorse everything no matter what the product is as long as it pays them to do it.

I actually don’t think that I’ve purchased a product based on the celebrity that endorses it. This was a great article, it really did make me stop and think about the brands I’ve purchased and the celebrities behind them. Even though I personally don’t choose based on celebrities, I believe that there are probably a lot of people out there who do.

What can I say? I will always remeber something that comes with Jonathan Rhys Mayer’s face. Even if it’s a male parfume (I’m female)…
So I think that sometimes the subject is more important than the object.

Matching the right celebrity with the right product is tough, but when it fits it is great for the company.

@ Videomark: I totally agree. It shows they understand the brand and the customers’ relationship with the brand.

@ Sophie: Well, I love, love Jonathan as an actor. And as an advertising major, I like the Hugo commercial and the realness of the promise. Perfect choice for the brand and the audience.
P.S. I wish all celebrities were like Jonathan.

@ Christine Ramsay: It sometimes works and it is sometimes a big waste of money. I am glad you liked the piece.

@mitchey: I know, right? It is not only the company who should have some guidelines but the celebrities too.

@ Christine Rose: Yeah, there are lots of people who do. I haven’t bought strictly based on the celebrity but I do think having beautiful celebrities endorse the right product makes it sell and it is actually believable. Hell, Jane Fonda looks good so I’d buy her fitness routine tapes for instance. It’d be awesome to be that fit at her age.

Sure if I could get a well-known celebrity to help me promote my book I would certainly do it.

That depends on what products. For skin care products, usually they will get celebrities, do you notice that? Maybe they look more attractive, and people will be convinced and will buy the products. Just my opinion..

    @deep blue: Thanks.

@ PR Mace: Yeah. But I wouldn’t want any celebrity. I think I would Nathan Fillion the most because he is really nice, cute, has and most importantly has a popular tv show where he plays a writer. Talk about relevance:)

@Starpisces: Well, they have a point. Plus, it is at least a little more memorable than a regular Jane or Joe. But I am much more impressed and inclined to try if I know that celebrity is really using that product;)
