Celebrities vs. Fans

Some celebrities don’t take attention well. We are by now used to their outbursts towards the paparazzi, but some don’t like their fans much either. Is it OK to be a celebrity and not like your fans?

It is understandable that celebrities are tired of paparazzi. I mean who really wants to be photographed during a bad hair day, an intimate family outing or just when one wants to be another face in the crowd? Fair enough. Jim Carrey did a hilarious job at making fun of this annoying paparazzi behavior during one of his appearances on Letterman. Supposedly magazines have published his dental records and another page features a picture of his colon. Mel Gibson’s Icon productions did a nice little thriller on the subject simply called Paparazzi, a movie about how an actor is forced to do edge when his family’s life was disregarded by the magazine press. OK, all good points. Frankly if I see another feature article on Jolie and Pitt on any topic, I’m just going to throw up. But what about the fans? Now what if you are a celebrity and your fans want to say hello to you? Or take a picture? Do you ignore them? Reject them rudely? Throw things at their windows? Like, say, oranges???

Yes, this latest bizarre celebrity behavior came from Jude Law. OK, it can not have been staged, since well- it doesn’t take much of a production to go to your kitchen. So apparently some students’ balcony had a view of Jude’s apartment and they wanted to take his pictures while he was out working out. Sure, it can be understood that he needs his space and he must be getting attention all the time but it is not like the fans were attacking him or one of his loved ones. You don’t want attention? You don’t move close to a university, a place full of potential fans. Better yet, if you don’t want attention, you don’t become an actor. If it is your passion, you do have two paths to choose from: You can either find a way to be under the radar like James Spader or Daniel Day-Lewis or you just find a way to deal with your popularity. You don’t also engage in scandalous behavior like cheating on your famous actress fiancée with the nanny of your kids. And well, you don’t throw oranges at your fans. It gives you more coverage, more publicity (albeit bad) and more juice to the press.

I totally agree that if Jude Law wants his privacy he has to create it and not think that people are going to ignore him 100% of the time when he is giving them full view of his personal activities at home. He needs to choose much more wisely where he lives, or the setup of his home, in order to not be seen by Joe Q. Public from their living spaces. With celebrity comes the need to create your own private space…it is the price one has to pay for being famous and very well paid. That all being said I do think it is rude of the individuals taking the photos since he obviously is at home and doing his daily activities, but if he cannot take the heat at all he really does need to find a cooler place to live.
