Elizabeth Taylor: Her Engagement to be Married That Ended About 60 Years Ago

Elizabeth Taylor’s enchantment, her talent and her compassion were admired by many in her six decades of acting.

Just watching National Velvet brings back the enchantment and talent that captivated the audiences in every movie Elizabeth Taylor had ever played a role in. Over the course of her six decades of acting, she was enjoyed and adorned by so many people.

Even through her past years of illnesses and up until her death on March 23 of this year, she always seemed to have that Elizabeth Taylor sparkling smile which was filled with so much kindness and care.

William Pawley

Elizabeth Taylor was married many times throughout her life. Actually, she married Richard Burton twice. There was another man in her life before any of her marriages took place. She loved him very much even though she was only 17-years-old. Elizabeth Taylor met William (Bill) Pawley in 1949. They became engaged. Her engagement went as far as to have the announcement printed in the newspaper. But, they never married.

Broke off engagement: Never married

The studio where she worked wanted her interests to be with someone other than Pawley, such as Glen Davis. Elizabeth Taylor even said she would give up acting for Pawley. Pawley, evidentially, could not handle all the attention. About six months after they were engaged, the engagement was broken off, supposedly by him. Elizabeth Taylor married Nicky (Conrad Nicholson) Hilton, Jr. about eight months later. The first of many of her marriages.

She kept Pawley’ love letters all of her life. Elizabeth Taylor addressed Pawley in letters, in different ways. One of her opening lines to him was “My Dearest Baby.” Could you ever imagine being so much in love at 17, that you would give up your successful acting career just to be together?

Pawley said that he had talked with her about a year before her death.

Even though months have gone by since her passing, Elizabeth Taylor will always be remembered for her love, compassion and talent. Her hard work on things that meant so much to her, such as her relentless fight against Aids, will never be forgotten.
