Farewell, Tita Cory
She ended the dictatorship, she led rallies, she was loved by many. At 76, many would say she led a full and meaningful life.
Even a stage 4 colon cancer could not stop her spirit as she joined rallies and different causes in the Philippines. Former president Corazon Aquino still gave opinions on the latest political news in our country, proving that her value in the political scene is still well respected.
Former president Corazon Aquino’s life and presidency marked a lot of firsts in Philippine history. She led the first (and) biggest ever funeral march for her assasinated husband senator Ninoy Aquino which estimates say that about 2 million people joined. She was also the first female president of the Philippines
Her regime started when former president Marcos and his family fled the country due to the massive rally the people held, famously known as “People Power”. People vying for her as the president had her swear into presidency whem it was confirmed that Marcos left the country.
Her term didn’t go unchallenged, despite the fact that the people loved her, 7 coup ‘de etat attempts, various rally against her land reform bill are enough to give any president a really really difficult time.
When she descended from the presidency, she was still loved, she still had the image of a hero. Still the mother that held the filipino family close and fought the adversary that is hurting her family. Even today we can feel the love for her as countless masses are being held in her name. For her health.
Like former president Estrada said, ” Today our country has lost a mother”
She died today, 3:18am(GMT+8), Saturday, August 1, 2009 at the age of 76.
The Filipino people will not forget her. The Filipino people will be forever in debt to her for she released us from the deadly dictatorship that was plaguing our country
We will still tie a yellow ribbon the old oak tree.
I also propose that august 1 be yellow day. A commemoration and celebration of the life a great leader led.
