Free Dinners for Children in Poverty

Different places are giving kids in poverty a decent nutritious supper. A supper they may not get at home.

In cities where the population is 50% of the households in that city fall below the poverty level, after school meals are being served to the kids because they may not get nutritious meals at home. These are paid for by the Department of Agriculture to Vermont, 12 other states and Washington D.C.

All across the country, about 49,000 children partake of these after school meals every day. This is not a cheap undertaking. From 2009-2013 it will cost eight million dollars to feed these kids. “As the economy gets worse we’re seeing more and more kids, said Beth Baldwin Page, director of Boys and girls club of Brattleboro in Vermont.

There are requirements for each meal. Each meal has to have a protein, fruit, vegetables, milk and a bread or grain.

The Brattleboro Boys & girls club independently started to offer meals for these kids 2 1/2 years ago.  Recently, they heard the government was offering to reimburse them for each meal.  They signed up and now gets $2.68 a meal. They offer these meals 3 days a week.

IIt’s great to know these kids get a healthy meal at least 3 times a week.

A very interesting piece. Over here in the UK these children are eligible for free school dinners and I believe all the younger children are given a piece of fruit each day to try and improve their health.

Great post, all kids should get free meals at a primary age so there would no stigma attached to getting feed in school and in some cases give a basic need at source.
We in Scotland are trying to have it introduced…. cheers
