George Carlin Ceremonial Speech
For my Oral Communication class, my final speech that I was to write and deliver was something that I felt was a touching tribute to a man that had brought laughter to so many while simultaneously pissing off so many others. I wrote my "ceremonial" speech about George Carlin and the impact he made on many other comedians’ lives. What follows is the outline. I am also submitting the manuscript as well as a separate entry.

Specific Purpose:
To deliver a speech of tribute for George Carlin to my audience. This speech essentially eulogizes George Carlin.
Attention Device/Tie To The Audience:
He gave us the 7 words you can never say on TV, used language as a weapon against those who would oppress the masses, and made a lot of us that have seen his comedic genius nearly wet our pants w/ laughter. What do you think of when you see this face? ** What do you know of him? Where do you remember him from?
INTRODUCTION
He gave us the 7 words you can never say on TV, used language as a weapon against those who would oppress the masses, and made a lot of us that have seen his comedic genius nearly wet our pants w/ laughter. What do you think of when you see this face? ** What do you know of him? Where do you remember him from? For those who may not know him, this is George Carlin. His comedy stylings have delighted fans and pissed off critics since the 1960’s. His use of language as a comedy device is unparalleled. He’s a comedian’s comedian. His career spanned 5 decades and he has been hailed as “one of the most popular, durable, productive and versatile comedians of his era,” according to Mel Watkins and Bruce Weber of the New York Times. His wit and word play have astounded fans and critics for decades. George Carlin died of heart failure on June 22, 2008, at the age of 71.
Transition to the Body of the Speech: Several comedians and actors gathered at his funeral to pay their respects and say goodbye to a legend.
