Heath Ledger Posthumously Awarded Best Movie Villain
A tribute to both the fallen actor and his award.
On January 22nd of 2009 Heath Ledger, perhaps one of the greatest talents of our time, died at the age of 28. His light was snuffed out all too quickly in the both prime of his life and career. We can never forget his performances in such films as “Brokeback Mountain”, “The Patriot”, ”A Knight’s Tale”, ”The Brothers Grimm” and of course “The Dark Knight”. His performances were wonderful in prior movies but it was in The Dark Knight that we truly saw the depth and range of his acting abilities. Had I not found out ahead of time, I would never have believed that the psychotic and demented character of the Joker in “The Dark Knight” could have ever been played by Heath Ledger. In fact, even watching it today I have trouble believing it to be him. His performance as the Jokers was truly Stellar and worthy of the award of best movie villain. Perhaps the saddest thing about this is that the award was given after his death, that he could not live to see the fruits of his labor. The man was a genius at character development and portrayal and one can only imagine what he might have done with his talent had he lived a little longer. To quote a line from the movie “Blade Runner”, “The light that burns twice as bright burns half as long, and your light has burned so very brightly”. It is truly a shame that the best talents our world seem to burn out so very quickly. Our heart felt sympathies go out to the actor’s family and to Heath, where ever you are now, congratulations on a truly stupendous performance and a well deserved award. It is only too sad that it had to come after his death.
