Hollywood Supports Roman Polanski’s Crime of Rape

On Sept. 26, the renowned film director Roman Polanski, was in Sweden to accept an award for his accomplishments in filmmaking, was arrested by the Swiss police at the insistence of Los Angeles, California law enforcement.

Polanski, who has dual French-Polish citizenship fled the United States in 1978 before he could be sentenced for unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor, in this case, Samantha Gailey, a 13-year old girl that Polanski was photographing for a modeling shoot. Polanski gave Gailey champagne and Quaalude, a sedative drug, and performed oral sex, intercourse and sodomy on her.  But some of Hollywood’s most prominent luminaries contend that Polanski’s crime really is not as bad. More than 100 movie business heavyweights including directors Martin Scorsese, David Lynch, Mike Nichols and Pedro Almodovar are signing a petition to free Polanski.

Because of a plea bargain, the charges of rape by use of drugs, perversion, sodomy, lewd and lascivious act upon a child under 14 and furnishing a controlled substance to a minor were dismissed. Polanski pleaded guilty instead to engaging in unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor.

After a 42-day stay at a state prison where he underwent a psychiatric evaluation, Polanski was released and, under his court terms, was permitted to travel abroad. After his attorneys were told by LA Deputy District Attorney David Wells that the judge would most likely send Polanski to prison and deport him, the director fled the country and returned to France where he could not be extradited to the United States.

For the past twelve days Roman Polanski has been imprisoned and is considered a flight risk. The Swiss government does not allow bail for his release. Polanski was put in “provisional detention” in Switzerland while officials in Los Angeles attempt to extradite him to the U.S. where he can stand trial for his crimes.

The brutalization of a young girl, it seems, leaves  Hollywood big heart awful cold.
