Honor and Thank Those Who “protect and Serve”
This is meant to thank and honor all those in law enforcement.
This article is written to honor and thank all those who elect to “protect and serve” our
country and shield our society from the unpleasantness of criminals. Up until this last
year, I had really no idea what occurred after the accused had been convicted and
incarcerated. If it weren’t for our public servants such as our police officers and
correction officers performing this service, our world would be an unruly place. My son
decided to give back, protect and serve, after he received his Criminal Justice degree
much to our concern. In our opinion, after we heard a small portion of what goes on
after our criminals are incarcerated, these men and women can’t be paid enough for the risk they carry on a daily basis.
New York State treats their criminals very well. On average it costs over $30,000 to feed,
house, and take care of each prisoner in this state. Just think, many people don’t even
make that as a salary in one year. There are an enormous number of prisons in New York
State alone, 70 to be exact, and thousands of our tax dollars are spent each year on the
people behind bars. Their every need is provided for them. They have full medical
coverage and are afforded operations when needed, that many without health benefits
have to forgo. Their religious rights are protected and they are allowed to fully celebrate
every religious holiday for every religion known to man. They are educated and
encouraged to complete their high school degrees, and college courses are available to
them. They have visiting rights on every weekend and all holidays, and can attend
funerals of immediate family and have death bed privileges.
Most prisoners just want to do their time and return to society. If it weren’t for peace
officers stepping up to the plate to perform this needed task, our world would be a very
unruly place to live. These young men and women put their lives on the line on a daily
basis, willing to risk their well being to protect us from impending danger.
During the past year there have been quite a few publications printed about salaries and retirement benefits of our public servants. If the public only realized what occurs in theday of a peace officer’s life, they would not begrudge their remuneration. We are shielded from the underbelly of life, because our sons and daughters have chosen this life, within the walls of confinement, to insure our security and well being. If it weren’t forthese brave people to fulfill these positions in law enforcement, we would not feel thesafe and secure comfort that we take for granted every day.
Each day can be an unpredictable surprise for our civil servants and every dollar they earn is well deserved.
We never dreamed that our son would choose this route for his livelihood but are proud
of him for performing a job that is definitely necessary. New York State provides good
benefits for their civil workers and a fare wage for the position which is 100 percent
deserved by its employees. They work long hard shifts and put in a stressful day. They
need to be commended and not criticized for their wage scale and thanked for fulfilling a
job that many do not want to do or even know about. It’s a task that many could not
bring themselves to perform.
So, let this article serve as a big “thank you” to all those public servants out there that put
their personal safety and lives on the line every day to help and protect the rest of us that
can feel safe at night when we go to sleep. It’s because of the valuable task that you
perform every day that makes us feel protected.
