Introducing Bobby Knight, The Olympic Chair Tosser

by Lauren Axelrod in People, August 1, 2008

A funny speech introducing a Basketball Legend.

Hello everyone and welcome to the 1st ever Olympic tryouts for the competitive chair tossing competition. I see that you all are warming up your chairs for this event. This should be a hoot! I have been given the distinct honor of introducing tonight’s very special guest speaker. He started his coaching Career while in the Army. He was Army’s assistant basketball coach for two years, before taking over the head coaching duties. One of his players during his 6 years at West Point was Hall of Fame coach Mike Krzyzewski of the Duke Blue Devils.

From 1971-2000, he coached at Indiana University, where he led his teams to three NCAA championships, one National Invitation Tournament (NIT) championship, and eleven Big Ten Conference championships. For his accomplishments, he received the National Coach of the Year honor four times, and the Big Ten Coach of the Year honor six times. In 1976, the Indiana Hoosiers were undefeated at 32-0 and won the championship. There has been No other Division I men’s basketball team since, that has had an undefeated season including a championship.

This coach is the only one ever to coach the winner in the men’s basketball NCAA, the NIT, the Olympic Gold, and the Pan American Games Gold. He was most recently the men’s basketball head coach at Texas Tech before announcing his retirement on February 4, 2008. He has won more NCAA Division I men’s basketball games than any other head coach, hitting the 900 victory mark on January 16, 2008.

He has been the subject of numerous books and movies. He has had a reality show titled Knight School, and made a cameo appearance on the 2003 movie Anger Management. He has often been the target of unfounded criticisms. For instance, one time while coaching a game, he witnessed a little old lady without a chair and so he kindly tossed his chair across the gym floor to her. There have been a few who seen this as bad!

He is the greatest basketball coach ever, and the Founding father of Chair tossing, the one, the only Bobbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbby Knight!!!!!

    Lauren,
This piece is quite entertaining. I grew up in Michigan in the 1970’s and 1980’s and was quite familiar with Bobby Knight and the Hoosiers. I was a University of Michigan wolverwine basketball fan.
I can’t believe that this article hasn’t recieved more exposure. I loved it.
