Is Kobe Bryant the Best Player in the World?

Dedicated to the best player in the NBA. He’s simply amazing.

Kobe Bryant is the best player to ever play the game of basketball. He is a man who truly understands the game and takes it to another level every time he steps on the court. Any argument in opposition of that is an illegitimate argument because he’s simply incomparable.

Ever since Bryant stepped on the scene his presence has been felt casting him into a league of extraordinary men. Bryant scored 81 points resulting in a triumph over the raptors on the 22nd of January in the year of 2006. In that 81 point game Bryant shot a FG (Field Goal) of 60% shooting 46 times and scoring 28 of those times. He also shot 18-20 at the FT line(Free Throw). [Fn. 1] That is simply amazing. He also has three NBA titles, ten NBA ALL-STAR appearances, has been elected to the ALL-NBA TEAM every year since 1999, shares the single game record for three pointers in a game, won the NBA SLAM DUNK competition and not to mention he has made the NBA ALL-DEFENSIVE TEAM for the last 9 seasons. [Fn. 2] There is absolutely no one with a more “complete game” than Bryant. [Fn. 2]

Some may say Wilt Chamberlain is the best player because he holds the record for the most scored in one game but Bryant is still better. When we analyze Chamberlain’s 81 point game he shot a total of 63 times scoring 36 of those shots. That’s a measly 57% shooting average compared to Bryant’s 60% and not to mention Bryant took fewer shots than he did. Bryant also played a total minutes of forty-two minutes and Chamberlain played the whole game. [Fn. 1] [Fn. 3] Opinions are nice but come on the facts speak for themselves.

Recently when the Boston Celtic’s forward Paul Pierce was asked “Is Kobe really the best player in the world?” Pierce replied, “I don’t think Kobe is the best player. I’m the best player. There’s a line that separates having confidence and being conceited. I don’t cross that line but I have a lot of confidence in myself.” [Fn. 4] Umm Mr. Pierce I have 5 words for you, what have you been smoking? Considering the fact that Bryant averaged 10.4 more points than Pierce in the playoff with 30.1 PPG (Points Per Game) and averaged 8.7 more points in the regular season with 28.3 PPG average how could he even think that. [Fn. 5-6] Not to mention Bryant carried his team and Pierce didn’t he had 2 incredible players assisting him the whole way. Bryant had no one reliable on his team to count on and it displayed it’s self during the playoff when he was being tripled and/or quadruple teamed with no one able to make a shot but him. He displayed greatness because not even Jordan had to go throw a moment like that, he always had a team behind him.

Bryant is now on a mission to get the gold as he didn’t win the finals and this time he’s not settling for second place. There is no one in the world that can hold the great Kobe Bryant and as he wins the gold for USA it will be another accomplishment that supports his prominence.

Can’t say I agree with you here mate. Jordan, and the things he could do far surpass what Kobe has done. Yes he is a great player but without Shaq, he hasn’t managed a title. Jordan only had role players around him also, the likes of Pippen and Rodman and still managed to win 6 titles. Nice article though. You sure got a few people talking. Nice work.

Thanks to all that have commented and those to come I cant wait to read your comments but addressing RJ Chamberlains comment about Jordan I have 2 words for you SUPPORTING STAFF. You mentioned all Jordan had was a supporting staff well guess what Kobe lacked a supporting team. No one on the team can create a shot and everyone except maybe Rodman on Jordan’s team could have knocked down a shot if Jordan was incapable. Another point is that Jordan never had enough fire power to score 81 points in a game and was far from it but thanks for sharing your thoughts.

you made me read the whole thing because its all true. i have been tell my friends for years that Kobe is the best because the game has changed so much. its way harder than before, and for him to play at this level is crazy! i give my respect to MJ and WC but Kobe is just that much better. forget about that big head clown Pierce he did not bring his team anywhere for how long and because two very good player, who came to his rescue and they won he thinks its because of him. somebody gave him some bad drug maybe some mushrooms. everybody know that the Boston was the best team this year, but pierce is not the best player. i bet everybody in the NBA is laughing at him. he must feel so stupid now for saying that hahahahahahahahahahahahaha lets all laugh lol good article i will post it everywhere. lakers for life baby KB24 they will be killing for the next 3 to 5 years and gasol need to be more aggressive thats it hahahahahahaha pierce lol go ice you knee!

Living in this the great country we live I have the right to an opinion. 1st off great article, I found it very informative. Although there might be comments like “your crazy” or “you must be smoking” after this post i personally still think that Jordan is the best player to step foot on a basketball court. Sure his highest scoring game was only 63 points which is 19 points shy of Kobes stellar performance i still believe Jordan is the best hands down. I will say that Kobe is the best player out today. Unlike some i don’t only look at performance, i also look at what they have done for the game of basketball. Jordans influence is obviously still around with the Jordan Brand line, and personally i think that he made people really watch basketball again. I also notcied that you failed to mention Lamar Odom and Pau Gasol whom arent the two worst players in the world. Just like Jordan had Pippen and Rodman, Kobe had Odom and Gasol, do you mean to tell me that they weren’t good enough to be his supporting cast?

    On September 25, 2008 at 8:33 pm

To Mr. On The Fence dude
Gaol and Odom couldnt buy a bucket in the playoffs when it really counted and failed as a supporting cast. Unlike Jordan Kobe faces a full 5 on 1 attack and still scored and his so called supportinf staff couldn’t hit an open shot. Pipen or Kukoc would definatly made an open shot and thats the difference.

That is true. Personally i still think Jordan is the best player and thats just my opinion. Great article still.

I love the diversity of your subjects! I can’t agree that Kobe is the best, not yet anyhow. He is only halfway through his career. He is certainly becoming a part of the conversation. I would probably put him in the top 20 right now and if he has another good year or two he’s looking at top 10. Beyond that the jury is still out until we see what else he accomplishes in his studly career. He needs to overcome his main weakness: selfishness, born out in his desire to take bad shots even when he isn’t hot. Hey, if you’re hot, take the shot! If you’re not, take a good shot or help a teammate to take a good shot. We saw with Jordan that his weakness was taking bad shots and trying to win the game by himself. His greatness was put on display when he made his teammates, and thereby his team, better. That resulted in 6 rings. We’ve seen Kobe desire to be a team player, and he certainly has the all around skills to do so, but he is still stuck on himself, and wants to be the man. As long as he wants to be the man, his team will suffer.

    To Brian,
I’d first like to say thanks for the compliment and for checking out my work. Next I would love to address the issue of Kobe being so called “selfish” when he averaged over 5 assist per game since 2000 and is ranked #15 in assists. In addition he also ranks #1 in points, 5th in steals and second in free throws, did Jordan have statistics like that or anyone else? He is well rounded. Also a proven fact that his team is no back-in the-day bulls team. Not even close.

Marlon, good word and thanks for the reply. Kobe certainly is well-rounded, one of the all-time best. I simply think that if he could overcome that inate desire that all good ballplayers have to carry a team on his/her shoulders, he would become even better. Granted, there are times when a player needs to step up individually and carry a team, and Kobe is among the best in that ability. The disappointing thing about American basketball these days though is that players forget it is a TEAM sport, not an individual one. Incidentally, I think Jordan’s success led to this downfall (who didn’t want to be like Jordan?). And who doesn’t want to be like Kobe? Other countries have caught up to the US in hoops precisely because they have a team mentality in a team sport. It will be interesting to see where Kobe takes this team, and how he does it.
