The 2009 VMA’s was not really a shocker for a non-fan of Kanye West like me. He has a history of stupid outbursts and then pretending to apologize afterward. When he took the microphone from Taylor Swift to announce a stupidly obvious fact like Beyoncé had one of the best videos of all time, it was not surprising. He flipped off the audience for booing him (yeah, he really regretted it) and I started the countdown for his lame let-me-apologize-again-for-my-stupidity-before-people-stop-buying-my-mediocre-albums-and-i-go-hungry apology.
I love hip-hop and rap, but when wannabe rappers like Kanye act a fool, fans have to defend it even more. Luckily, West is more of a pop singer than a rapper. Real rappers include Ludacris, 50 cent, Eminem, you know, people with real talent that don’t have to ask for recognition.
He b’d and moaned when he did not win best video of the year in 2006 at the European VMA’s for his lame video “Touch the Sky”. While the award was being presented to the truly talented and creative artists, he got on stage and complained that he should have won that award. He publically apologized for the outburst (sound familiar?). He also blamed his race as the reason for why he was not asked to host the VMA’s. Talent has nothing to do with race. Boyz II Men were not held back. Michael Jackson was never thought less talented or overlooked because he was black. But the only difference, they were truly talented and had character and class. They did not need to be reassured of their greatness or talent constantly like some self-conscious wannabe. If they were discriminated against, they were confident their hard work and talent would overpower any barriers. But if you don’t have that (achem!) then the race card looks really nice and safe. Kanye West vowed never to come back to MTV after he lost the VMA’s 2 years in a row and was never asked to host it. If ONLY we had been so lucky! Taylor Swift could have enjoyed her award. Beyoncé was truly a gracious and sweet person to allow Taylor to speak when she was being presented an award. That is true class and good manners. *tear*
