Lady Gaga: Is Ugly The New Hot?
Overview of Lady Gaga’s music, fashion sense and how far singers go to promote themselves…

I have to admit the woman has caught some catchy tunes and even though I am not a fan, I don’t necessarily despise her. But her videos are killing me. She-no doubt along with her director and costume desginer- bring the most hideous outfits/make-up/clothes pop history has ever seen, yes including the 70s/80s/90s. If she poses in regular sexy underwear, I consider that to be normal. I mean you have seen her videos right? Here is a reminder:

Rocker Marilyn Manson had admitted that all his make-up and weird clothing (or non-clothing in some cases) were all about attracting attention. And I almost saluted the guy with respect. Entertainment industry is tough and singers are no exception. They do whatever they can to make that 15 minutes to last a lifetime. The competition is fierce. And although, in an ideal world they wouldn’t have gone to such extremes, most of the time they either resort to the sex sells concept or wildly marginal images like Manson. The weird thing is that this is the first time I see a pop diva trying to use both. While Pink played with the idea, Gaga went all the way. So much that I can’t watch the videos. I even hate it when I am reminded of them. She must be having fun- I hope she is. Because otherwise it’d be torture for her.
Just watch her videos. I dare you to disagree.

I couldn’t get through the video, about 30 seconds was all I could take, I must admit, I’ve never heard her music or vids, I only know of her from people talking about weird stuff, I saw a pic of her in High School, she looked pretty normal and good looking actually, IDK, she’s not my thing, MM… well, I’ve heard a few songs, he’s just so strange… I just can’t do it…
But that’s just me.

I feel music today is actually not much about music anymore, but more about selling sex. I feel that most artists compose from their libido and not from their heart or brain. Personally, I do not even watch MTV.

I like her. She’s a success at what she does. That’s why I like her. I’m trying to figure out how to bring attention to myself in order to promote my ebook. If I only had her talent for marketing. I’ve watched several of her videos. They are hard to watch. That’s the point. That’s why we are discussing her. She knows exactly what she’s doing. I’m even more impressed by the fact that she does have musical talent. And her music has a nice Euro-trash disco beat. The real test will be if she’s still front page news ten years from now. If she is she’ll be in the Rock and Roll hall of Fame. I’m rooting for her. And I’m trying to figure out how to translate her marketing savvy to my own situation. Ga Ga Ga!

@ Bo Jack: I don’t like either of them. They both really make my eyes hurt. But Manson’s honesty was at least refreshing. You know some rockers can’t watch their videos because of their awful hair and clothes? Someone should give them the good news. Gaga has done worse:)
@ Martine: I watch VH1. it is the only music channel that concentrates on rock as well as pop. But even on VH1, there is no escape from Gaga.
@ Guy: Guy, I am not sure you need Gaga’s marketing skills would really help your work. And I totally second the “thrash” part while defining her music. It is ridiculous. Yes, us writers need to be more marketing savvy, but I don’t want to be like gaga or madonna. Hell, Madonna looks normal next to gaga!

Though many youngsters are going Gaga of her, I always feel going too over the top just to be on top can be a death sentence. No need to think hard, there’s plenty of examples to look back at.:)

I really wouldn’t miss her if she were gone:)

We have to be open that despite we may not like the way artists show themselves with their music, the rest of the world may like them. It’s the same way in blogging, no matter how you keep your topics on the marketable side sometimes it’s just not enough and those who write with less ethical standards gets more hits. I suppose if Lady Gaga was true enough to herself about the way she presents herself, that’s fine and we may do the same when we have stood by our ideals in writing even only few heed our words.

great article… I actually quite like some of her music and her outfits are like the things people wear on the big floats or at carnivals, so it puts you in a GaGa mood to start with. I like outrageous (perhaps my life is boring LOL) she has been likened to Sue Pollard who is another actress who started her fame in the 70’s on Hi De Hi… Gaga has even copied some of her weird hats and costumes!!

Oh and GaGa has an incredible body, even if she is rumoured to be an hermaphrodite

@lilyrose: really? didn’t know that. but I wouldn’t be shocked if she was:D I was never a big fan of fashion and I am more afraid of all the fashionistas that will decide to look like her reallyy:D
@deep blue: well, you are right. what can I say? At least, for every diva, there is a simple girl with her instrument. Thank goodness for variety and ideals;)

Lady Gaga is a great talent but sometimes i find her ‘experiments’ simply disgusting or needless. Anyway, she is definitely unavoidable. Good writing !

@thanks, shamyl. even your comment shows that you are a rocker. but yeah, that being unavoidable part is starting to get on my nerves.

I do like and admire Lady Gaga. She is original and unique. My favourite songs are: Bad Romance, Speechless and Alejandro. But, I also like Paparazzi and Poker Face.
The video Bad Romance is very good; it is bizarre, but truly interesting.

Her songs are quite cathcy, I have to admit that. That’s where a big part of her success comes from and I can respect that. But the videos? Not so much. I mean the hair? clothes? But then again, it is nothing personal. I am not a huge fan of any woman who either makes out with a man/and or a woman and dances in her underwear all the time. I mean do it once, do it twice…but every time? obviously it is not just gaga who does this…

Alan asked me once…. why all female singers have to sing almost naked ?? In my days everything was different… it was the voice, the talent that counted. Today, a singer to be successful, must have a beautiful body and know how to shake her “bon bon” !!!
