Larry Sultan Has Died

Larry Sultan has died the influential California photographer has died at the age of 63.

Larry Sultan, the influential California photographer has sadly died at the age of 63 born in Brooklyn, Sultan was raised mostly in Los Angeles, and is probably most famous for “Evidence” a collaboration with Mike Mandel.

The book was solely of pictures culled from the vast archives of industry and government using a grant and an introductory letter from National Endowment for the Arts, Mandel and Sultan, convinced large companies to allow them access to their photographic archives.

 “Evidence” as Mandel later said,  was “more than just the modernist practice of fine-tuning your style and way of seeing.”  The images seemed to have been picked for their resemblance to installation art of the time, and the 59 photos appeard, without captions to explain what they were or where they emanated from.

Sultan died on Sunday at his home in Greenbrae, California He was 63.
