Lizzie Miller is Not Fat

There is a raging debate going on right now about a single, candid photo run in the fashion magazine “Glamour.” The photo depicts a young woman, Lizzie Miller, in a relaxed pose; and the reason it is creating such a stir is because Miller is a regular-sized woman, not a stick thin typical model.

A lot of people are saying that the photo is of a “fat woman.” Fat people are saying it’s about time that fat people were shown in magazines. Some people are criticizing the decision of Glamour to show photos of a fat woman; they say it promotes an “unhealthy lifestyle.”

What these people fail to realize is that Lizzie Miller is not fat! She is just a healthy, regular sized woman.

Keep in mind that the photo in question is a candid photo of Miller seated in a chair. It is not a posed, manipulated photo. Anyone seated in a chair and leaning forward is going to have a roll of skin and fat around their belly. Anyone seated in chair will have their thighs flattened out. It is not a flattering pose.

Fashion models don’t even look like themselves in the magazines. The women are posed, lighted, and covered with make-up; then the photos are air-brushed and photo-shopped.

As a people, we need to get rid of the idea that there is some ideal body type. We are all told when we are young that we are all unique, and that we should all celebrate our differences. Then, particularly for women, when we grow up, we’re told that we should all try and attain this singular definition of beauty.

It’s time to get real, be healthy, and accept our body types and the body types of others.

I agree that there is a body-type that we are all supposed to aspire to according to the media, and that is wrong. I don’t understand what this photo was trying to achieve though. The woman is definitely not fat, but she is posed in an extremely unflattering way.

A lot of people have different boundaries as to what is fat and glamour and fashion is one place where weight isn’t tolerated and it is quite sad that it goes like that but you know, if its part of the job, then it is the job. A good article inspiring us to be happy with our bodies but women have always been insecure and fixed ideas are hard to shake…I really hope people can accept themselves for who they are though.
