Michael Jackson: Natural Death or Manslaughter?

Michael Jackson: Was it foul play – What are the facts?

Dr Murray’s lawyer says that “based on Dr Murray’s detailed description of Michael Jackson’s last days, he should not be a target of criminal charges”. To prove a charge of manslaughter, authorities must prove there was a reckless action that created a risk of death or great bodily injury. If a doctor is aware of the risk, there might also be an issue of whether the patient was made aware of that risk and decided to take it. A patient’s complicity in taking the risk could reduce the doctor’s culpability.

Eight physiciians have prescribed drugs to Michael Jackson. Jackson had a well-known history of using prescription drugs, especially painkillers. His registered nurse and nutritionist, Cherilyn Lee, repeatedly rejected his demands for Diprivan.

Now consider the plight of AEG. The financial performance of this company depends upon exact cause of death. AEG’s chief executive Randy Phillips comments that the event insurance contains a clause which would cover the cancellation of the concerts due to Michael Jackson’s death from a drugs overdose. The insurance would not pay out in the event of death from natural causes.  Ultimately, AEG may have to file a claim against Jackson’s estate. The Jackson estate is heavily in debt with several multi-million law suits already pending. the worth of the estate is already very much in doubt.

The Jackson estate is moving quckly to take advantage of interest in the late singer.  According to the Los Angeles Times Sony Pictures has bid $50m (£30m) for footage from the reherrsals. The winning studio would produce a film with AEG and the estate.  AEG and the estate are also negotiating with several television networks and pay-per-view outlets on a TV special that would be a stage show featuring Jackson’s music and dancing and a number of big-name guests.
