Michelle Obama Fashion Question

by LG in People, January 24, 2009

The ultimate fashion question for Michelle Obama and other American women.

Michelle Obama, the new First Lady of the United States and the wife of President Barack Obama noticeably did not wear nylons or hosiery when she walked on stage to accompany her husband with his acceptance speech at Grant Park. The magnificent sight of the first family mostly clad in a red and black ensemble will forever be entrenched in the memories of all Americans. One curious bit of trivia however may not resonate in the minds of Americans from that day forward. The trivia question is when to wear or not wear nylons has to be addressed.

Michelle Obama has nice legs that aptly support her 5′11” frame. The media says that she wears a size 8 though she appears to be a bit larger when standing almost the same height as her husband, President Barack Obama. She did not wear nylons the night in Grant Park in Chicago, Illinois which is a minor issue. She probably did not wear nylons because of the mild weather that Chicago is not known for. Michelle Obama wore a small black empire sweater that showed off the beautiful red and black knee length dress designed by an American. Her legs were bare but it seems appropriate because nylons for some reason may have dulled the most historic occasion.

However, on inauguration day, Michelle Obama noticeably wore nylons that completed the gold embellished duster and knee length empire ribbon like belted waist lined dress. She walked the entire inauguration parade in heels which Oprah commended her for doing for President Barack Obama. Did she wear the nylons because of the cold Washington, D.C. temperature or did she wear nylons because of the honorable historic occasion of her husband, Barack Obama being sworn in as the 44th President of the United States of America. Oprah telecasted two days after the inauguration with Bon Jove, Gail King and Forrest Whitaker without wearing nylons. While still a bit overweight, Oprah wore a red dress and kept crossing and uncrossing her legs like enjoying the bareness. At some points Oprah was looking a little uncomfortable.

Does wearing nylons denote the temperature of the weather, the care freeness of the occasion or the civility of the events? Only Michelle Obama and maybe Oprah have the answer to this ultimate fashion question.
